It aims at identifying and describing concepts and concerns of ICU nurses regarding sedation use and protocols in ventilated patients.The articles research design composed of qualitative content analysis of national electronics survey data of 106,000 members of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. Data from 67 single nurse responses to open ended survey evaluations of sedation perceptions. The study utilized 67 survey entries of open ended perceptions. Entries were primarily staff nurses making up 61.8%. They had years of experience with the average around 14.7 years of ICU experience. 57.6% were critical care registered nurse certified.Data was collected electronically via electronic communication and social media sites of the American Association of Critical Care nurses. The findings demonstrate that a large sample of the critical care nurses state recommendations to use less or lighter sedation practices. However, there are a handful of factors that impact that practice, such as personal perspectives, evidence based practices, and individualized patient needs. Ultimately the findings indicate a strong commitment to improving sedation practices in the ICU. The study collects qualitative open ended survey data of qualified critical care nurses with a vast amount of critical care experience. Collecting data of such experienced nurses help secure the datas validity. The study only uses electronic data collection of 67 responses. The responses are open ended and make it difficult to organize and categorize data.Recommendations regarding potential application for future practice that are insightful and appropriate: The quality of the data from the study helps indicate the potential future adaptation of lighter sedation protocols in the ICU. Experienced nurses seem to appreciate that less sedation is most situation are better for their patients and leads to less complications such as infections and can drastically decrease length of stay in the ICU. This study is insightful and can be duplicated and expanded.
