I work weekends at a bar and the hours can be very long and exhausting. I started working at this bar while doing my prerequisites at my previous school, therefore the owners were made aware of my schooling and how I would have to adjust my hours once I started Chamberlain University. The employee involved was one of my closest work friends. She knew that I was in school, and I even tried encouraging her to attend college with me. Our team was always receiving great customer reviews and I enjoyed working with her. I was so surprised when she started to retaliate by showing up to our shift late, she decided to stop talking to me and even made a remark that she is not giving all her energy for the first three hours of work. I was so frustrated and whenever I tried talking to her, she would walk away or stay silent.  I was putting the same effort into my job, but her behavior was starting to affect my work ethic.  I have been trying to communicate with her and I am not the best at communication, but we were very close at one point, and I was confused as to why she was so mad at me. I neglected to get the manager involved because I thought we could fix this. Eventually, I stopped trying to talk to her and we are still working together but it has not been the same. As McLean (2018, pg.447) mentioned “emotions can be contagious in the workplace”.Insight “In friendships, as in any interpersonal relationship, conflicts can arise, and dealing effectively with conflicts is important to maintain positive relationships” (Boersma-van Dam et al., 2019, pg.1). I consider this employee a friend because we use to give each other advice and confide in each other. This situation was an eye opener because this type of behavior was not expected. She knew about my studies, and she knew that my hours would have been changed, therefore I thought it would have been okay. I thought I handled the situation by informing her about the schedule change ahead of time, but I was wrong. I decided not to get the manager involved because based on our history, I assumed that we could fix the situation. Boersma-van Dam et al., (2019, pg.2) also stated that “positive problem solving occurs when an adolescent shows high concern for both oneself and one’s friend and is characterized by negotiation and compromise”. This could have been handled differently. Getting the manager involved was the right thing to do because in doing so, there would have been a meeting where she could express her feelings and we could come to a consensus. I have learned a lot from this situation and I will be better prepared to handle a conflict whenever it arises. ReferenceBoersma-van Dam, Hale, B., Koot, H., Meeus, W., & Branje, S. (2019).
