Throughout the entirety of reading I found myself in disbelief of what was being said most of the time, but one particular quote at the end really captured my attention. While Baumer is reflecting on the past and thinking about the future he writes “and men will not understand us…and the generation that has grown up after us will be strange to us and push us to the side” (Remarque 294). I began to think about our generation and all the veterans that we see who served before we were even born. Many of these men suffer from chronic physical ailments, mental health issues, ad they experience homelessness at a very high rate. Are these men so different after their experiences in war that we push them aside and do not care for them as much? Has what Baumer says been proven true over the many generations of veterans and civilians?
