These were the code names used by the intrepid French secret agent, Lise Marie de Baissac. Baissac worked for the Special Operations Executive, or SOE, during World War II. As a British citizen born of French parents, she wanted to fight against the rise of Nazi Germany, which, under Adolph Hitler’s rule, sought to dominate Western Europe. The SOE worked to combat German forces by conducting undercover sabotage and reconnaissance missions in territories that had been taken over by the German military. In September of 1942, Baissac and her colleague Andrée Borrel were among the first female SOE agents to secretly parachute into German-occupied France. Baissac’s mission was to act as a liaison between networks of agents and to start a new network based in the city of Poitiers. Choosing to hide in plain sight, she lived in a small apartment next door to the headquarters of the Nazi secret police, known as the Gestapo. The Gestapo were notorious for the brutality with which they treated their adversaries.Under the name of Irene Briss, a widow leading a quiet life, Baissac rode a bicycle throughout the countryside scouting for possible landing sites for parachutes and spy planes, and created a list of secret contacts. She then received parachuted containers of weapons, which she distributed to local farmers, to be used for sabotage. She also met other agents at the sites and helped them to establish themselves in the occupied territory.Because she did not have a wireless, she had to travel to Paris or Bordeaux to send and receive messages and collect funds. Her brother, Claude de Baissac, also an SOE agent, was stationed in Bordeaux. After eleven months, the Gestapo became suspicious. Remaining cool under the threat of capture, Baissac was able to return to England unharmed. There she helped to train new agents in parachuting. After recovering from a broken leg sustained during training, she completed other missions, including one in Normandy, France, where she worked with her brother Claude. In Normandy, Baissac pretended to be a refugee from Paris living in the house of a schoolmaster. There, she helped to set up more resistance groups and organize sabotage actions. Again traveling by bicycle, she maintained secret communications between groups and transported supplies. This was extremely dangerous work. Often covering forty miles in a single day, she carried arms and explosives as well as information about targets. Her actions, along with those of her colleagues, often delayed the arrival of German reinforcements to the front lines of battle. On two occasions, Baissac passed through German lines in areas being bombed by Allied forces. Once, when traveling with crystals hidden inside her belt (for repairing a broken radio), she was stopped by a German soldier conducting a spot-check. Baissac maintained the calm demeanor for which she had became known. The crystals were not found, and she was allowed to proceed with her journey. She continued her work in Normandy until the Germans retreated. In September of 1944, she returned to England, where she received many honors and awards for her brave service. After the war, Baissac worked for the BBC, the British Broadcasting Company, as a newsreader, translator, and announcer for the French service. She also married her childhood sweetheart, an artist named Gustave Villameur.Lise de Baissac lived for nearly a century. Born in 1905, she died in 2004 at the age of 98. In her obituary in the Guardian newspaper, she had described her time as a secret agent as being not so glamorous, but rather consisting of “sheer hard work. What was needed was cold-blooded efficiency for long, weary months rather than any bursts of heroism,” she said.According to her SOE file, “[s]he was the inspiration of groups on the Orne [river] and by her initiative caused heavy losses to the Germans. . . . She also took part in several armed attacks on enemy columns.”Arts & Humanities English ECON MISC
