ESSAY:-The Roller SkatesI remember it like it was yesterday, it was 2006 and Nicole decided to start roller skating again. Nicole and her best friend decided to go to a local roller-skating rink called Northland Roller Rink located on the west side of Detroit. As I recall it was a Friday night the session was an adult night 25 years and up. The parking lot was packed there were a lot of people standing in line waiting to get in so many people had their skates across their shoulders some were holding them in their arms, the coolest thing was the skate bag shaped like a skate. As soon as Nicole entered the rink, she told her best friend lets head to the pro shop this is where you buy skates and accessories from. It appeared to be closed. So, Nicole walked off to find an employee to inquire about buying a pair of roller skates. Her best friend asked why not just rent a pair of skates. Nicole said to her that she did not like renting skates because some many people feet have been in them, and they smell bad like old socks. By that time someone had showed up to let Nicole into the pro shop. Nicole begins to ask questions about roller skates she mentioned it has been long time since she has roller skated and she just wanted a pair of skates to get the job done. The Northland employee asked Nicole her shoe size and then he went ahead to the back of the store he came back up with a white box. When he opened the box there were two white roller skates with a black sole and brown wheels in there. I smelt like brand new leather straight from the assembly line. She took one skate out the box to try on. I had some weight to me maybe because of the metal plate attached to the bottom of the skate boot sole. She had to put laces in me to get a true fit. She stood up in me and said she likes them she will take it. And with so much joy and excitement I got bought this was going to be the beginning of a skate relationship. Nicole and her friend left out the pro shop with me in her hands and she then went ahead to find a bench to sit on to finish putting my other skate together. We were all laced up and ready to go. here we go I said fresh out the box about to hit the wood floor. I’m nervous what would it feel like, what will she do! Nicole started to take steps with me the carpet where the skate rental was at. The carpet felt rough and scratchy like wool against my wheels. Then we rolled onto a tile floor sticky feeling like a jolly rancher was left out in the sun to long. The floor was packed with all kinds of different skates. I noticed some were wheat in color but the were called rental skates they also had orange wheels. Next, I saw black skates mostly men wore them and the last pair of skates I noticed were all white like me and I see a lot of women in these on the floor. Nicole then found a locker to put my newly purchased box and her belongings in. then she grabbed her friend hand and started skating towards the entry to get onto the rink floor. My wheels were roller like tires fast and smooth I believe she knows what she is doing. Before she could get to the floor, I felt a bump against the outside of my right skate she had bumped me against the wood safety barrier before she got on the floor, I ended up with a black scuff mark across the top side of my boot. Shoot I said to myself she marked me up already. The music was loud, but the DJ was playing some tunes that make you want to get out there and skate even if you could not. When Nicole stepped onto the wood floor it was brown with some type of slick coating which made my wheels move faster. And as Nicole moved faster the faster, I went too. I felt like I was gliding across a frozen pond it was such a smooth and slick surface I did not want this night to end. All I could think about was will she do some sweet skate tricks or turn around and skate backwards with me there were so many endless possibilities. As the night was getting close to an end the DJ played a slow song Nicole then turned around with me on her feet sheer excitement I had now I get to feel how it feels to roll backwards rather than forward she was doing pretty well and then I hit a spot in the floor which grabbed my wheel but Nicole did not fall she held us together and she continue to finish up her backwards skating. That was the last song of the night and Nicole ended up rolling off the floor there was a grated ramp I had to make it over it was rough and tough to roll over and it also made a loud sound. I guess it was there to help slow my wheels down to exit the floor safely she made it to a bench to sit down and take me off she unlaced on boot at a time and sat me up on the bench while she walks to her locker to get the box I came out of. she picked me up so gently like she was holding a baby and placed me backed into the box and closed the lid and all I could think is when will we do this again.Arts & Humanities Writing Creative Writing ENGL 1180
