Use the veil of ignorance to consider whether a society with cancer or one with DGD is more fair. If you don’t know who you are in either society, would you want to be in a society that had the cure or not?—in other words, which society would have a fairer or more just distribution of benefits and harms? What institutional and social factors influence your choice? For example, prejudice and discrimination against DGD people, forced sterilization, or different approaches to the care and quarantine of symptomatic DGD sufferers?  Then think about Lynn’s position. She didn’t ask to have her rare pheromones, and, for that matter, she didn’t ask to have DGD at all. If she didn’t know whether she was in her position, or in Alan’s or Naomi’s, or in her parents’, would she want the Dilg center, run by DGD people like her, to exist? On a contractarian basis, it seems like she should conclude that, even though she wouldn’t personally choose to run a DGD ward, she would want DGD wards to be run by people like her, and so it’s only fair for her to play the role she has ended up in within the world she’d like to exist.
