Australian researchers were interested in studying whether there was an association between a woman’s family history of depression and the onset of perinatal depression. Data from a large representative cross-sectional study found that 15% of pregnant women reported a family history of depression. The researchers decided that a prospective cohort study was the most suitable study design to answer the research question. They planned to recruit participants into the cohort through midwife-led family birthing centres attached to select local public hospitals in New South Wales. Birthing centres are midwife-led clinics that are attached to some hospitals and are one birthing option for women wanting a minimalmedical intervention option for the delivery of their baby.
