Unicellular organisms, such as fungi, protozoans, and algae, undergo mitosis as a form of asexual reproduction (binary fission). When cell division happens at an uncontrolled and abnormal rate, this can lead to skin cancers. Meiosis is a process of cell division primarily involved in the production of sex cells. In contrast to mitosis which produces a set of identical diploid cells (2n), meiosis produces non-identical haploid gametes (n). Non-identical gametes are made possible through a process in meiosis called crossing over in which homologous pairs of chromosomes exchange genetic information. This process, in addition to maternal and paternal chromosomal differences, allows for generational genetic variation. These two factors drive the evolution of meiosis and allow for innumerable offspring possibilities. During sexual reproduction, these gametes will combine to form a diploid cell called a zygote.
