An ardent abolitionist, Stowe began the novel as a series of sketches in The National Register in response to the Fugitive Slave Law (Links to an external site.), which essentially made it a crime to assist or even have knowledge of a slave who escaped to the “free” states in the North. Northern citizens were legally required to report knowledge of escaped slaves. The sketches were so popular that although the series was only supposed to run for fourteen weeks, it continued for ten months and was published as a book in 1852. It was only outsold by the Bible during the nineteenth century, and it had a great impact on public perception of slavery. Upon meeting Stowe, President Lincoln reportedly said, “So you’re the little lady responsible for this war.” Stowe’s text was so effective because of the role of “right feeling.” She believed that if she could humanize the slave, make readers see them as individuals rather that as an abstract policy, that they would act accordingly–if they felt right they would act right. The two main prongs of her argument asserted first Christianity and slavery were antithetical–that one couldn’t own slaves and be a Christian. Secondly, her argument shows that slavery harms the slaveowner as well because it violates makes one more callous and violated our feeling for one another. This week, discuss these two prongs of Stowe’s argument. Where in the text do you see slavery portrayed as negative for slaveholder as well as slave? Where do you see slavery and Christianity as being antithetical? Can you find instances in the text where people are changed by sympathy?
