CASE STUDY ANALYSIS PROCESS WORKSHEET
Title of Article/Issue:
Cyberbullying is the use of the Internet and related technologies to harm other
people, in a deliberate, repeated, and hostile manner.
Define the Situation
A.
List the relevant facts. State facts in complete sentences. (List
more than five facts.) At the end of your list, cite reference from
your source(s).
1. Cyberbullying is an intentional harm that comes from the use of
computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices.
2. There are a number of cyberbullying behaviors that already fall carefully
under existing criminal legislation, such as harassment, stalking, or
assault. However, these instances occur with relative infrequency.
3. Some forms of cyberbullying do not require legal intervention, for
example minor teasing.
4. Certain electronic bullies can remain virtually anonymous, which
increases the chances that they will be exploited to cause harm to others.
5. There have been several cases involving teenagers in the United States
that showed cyberbullying victims were almost twice as likely to have
attempted suicide compared to youth who had not experienced
cyberbullying.
6. All forms of bullying were significantly increased in committing a suicide
in the population of teenagers.

B.
What ethics/values are in question from the above facts? (List
more than three facts.)
1. Risk of cyberbullying
2. Suicide committing.
3. Lack of privacy.
4. Anonymous persons.
C.
WHO
1- Teens
List the stakeholders involved. List the individuals/groups who
are/may be affected by this issue and how. Be specific.
HOW
More teenagers are committing suicide
due to online or cyberbullying. They can be affected by spreading rumors about
victims through email, text messages, and social websites. Also, some other ways
that victims fall down are when some people pretend they are other people online
to trick victims into revealing personal information, or to post pictures of victims
without their consent.
2- Adults
Apparently Cyberbullying does not just
apply to teens. There are adult groups dedicated to harassing and defaming others
as well. Those groups can be found in communities linked to some blogs or websites
and they use the disguise of “anonymity” to harass their victims. They track them to
find valuable information to harass their victim’s family and friends. In a recent
study from Indiana State University, almost 22 percent of college students reported
that they had been cyberbullied and 25 percent said they had been harassed
through a social networking site.
3- Society
People are killing themselves because of
what other people are writing to them online or posting about them online. This is
much like killing the society we are living in. Some people make fun of ethnic
background, religion, race, etc. This is affecting the whole world not only the society
we live in. Suicides are happening, people are dying. The statistics are shocking;
according to an i-SAFE America survey, 58 percent of kids from fourth to eighth
grade have had something mean said to them online, while 42 percent of kids have
been bullied online. It’s upsetting for parents and teachers who strive to protect
children from the harmful effects of cyberbullying.

Isolating the major ethical dilemma
A.
Write several statements or questions that are ethical dilemmas from this
situation.
1- Cyberbullying is a problem that affects almost half of all American teens.
Majority or most teens spend a lot of time on a cell phone or chatting with
friends and uploading photos, videos, and music to websites. They may have
online friends whom they’ve never met in person. Teens have lives on the
Internet. And bullying has followed teens online.
2- How Do Cyberbullying Victims React?
There are certain ways that teens can prevent cyberbullying from
happening:

Refuse to pass along cyberbullying messages.

Tell friends to stop cyberbullying.

Block communication with cyberbullies.

Report cyberbullying to a trusted adult.
Raising awareness programs about cyberbullying in the community is an
essential need for youth and even adults.
3- How Can I Prevent Cyberbullying?
Cyberbullying can cause a variety of reactions in teens. Some teens react in
positive ways to try to prevent cyberbullying by:

Blocking communication with the cyberbully.

Deleting messages without reading them.

Reporting the problem to the police or the provider company.
Youth who are cyberbullied will likely seek revenge on the bully, and avoid friends and
activities. Some teens feel threatened because they may not know who is tracking them.
Although cyberbullies may think they are anonymous, they can be found. If a kid is
harassed and need help, he or she needs to save all communication with the cyberbully
and talk to a parent, teacher, or police officer.
B.
What is the ethical dilemma to be resolved NOW? State it using the
form: Should someone do or not do something? Keep this statement
simple. For example: Should people buy pirated software? NOT Should
people buy pirated software even though they cannot afford the price of
proprietary software?
o Should the law increase online security and impose harsh penalties against
bullies or should they just accept this situation?
o Should we increase awareness about cyberbullying among students in schools or
should families do that at home?
Making a decision and planning the implementation
Based on the analysis in Step III, choose which theory best applies to this situation. Add
any arguments justifying your choice of these ethical principles to support your decision.
(Name the specific theory that best fits the situation – Act Deontology)
Explain your choice above:
Cybersafety or peer mentoring theory that implements to get teachers advising
and counseling young students about issues affecting them. Peer mentoring has been
contributing in reducing bullying behaviors and issues within schools. Thus, peer
mentoring should be considered in a comprehensive approach to preventing
cyberbullying.
Your decision: What would you do? Why? List the specific steps needed to implement
your defensible ethical decision.
Cyberbullying has been a real concern among parents, educators, and students
alike. In my opinion, in order to reduce the consequences of such a behavior we need
for a group decision. Schools need to have an awareness programs. For instance,
schedule an “online ethical issues” class for students. Within this program students will
learn the basic steps to avoid being cyberbullied. They will be more mature to deal with
this issue if it happens to them. Also, parents have to watch their children closely to see
who they are talking to online or exchanging text messaging with whom? All of the
above methods can help to limit these hostile behaviors towards young people and even
adults. I think putting all of these instructions and give them to the school
administrations and to pass them to families will be a good solution for cyberbullying
issue
What longer-term changes (i.e., political, legal, technical, societal, organizational) would
help prevent your defined dilemma in the future?
To prevent cyberbullying from happening in the future we need to set strict
legislation policies. Schools should have effective policy that includes:
• Specific definitions for harassment, intimidation, and bullying.
• Consequences results and immediate actions.
• Procedures for reporting.
• Procedures for investigating.
• Procedures for preventing cyberbullying.
CONCLUSION
What do you see as the situation from your view?
