In the Romantic period, starting with Beethoven, musicians were viewed as artists not just blue collar workers. Did musicians change or were they just viewed differently? Did it have anything to do with what motivated musicians to compose or perform? Did that motivation change from the Classical to the Romantic? What does it mean to be an “artist”?
