Question: What are the effects of temperature on solubility?
Hypothesis: (Answer the question to the best of your knowledge, write as if then
statements. Be sure to answer both parts of question.) 2 points
Procedure:
Station 1
1. Take beaker A from ice, place the thermometer into it and record temperature on
data chart.
2. Using the scoops add KCl to saturate the solution. The large scoop is 5 grams
and the smaller is 1 gram. You will know that it is saturated when you see the
white solid at the bottom of the beaker. Be sure to stir after adding scoops.
3. When saturated, record the temperature and the total amount of grams added
before it becomes saturated. Example: 35g was not saturated and 36g was, so
record 35g.
4. Take beaker B from the hot plate. Record the temperature on data chart. Again
add KCl until the solution is saturated. Record temperature and amount of KCl
added before it becomes saturated. Don’t forget to stir!
5. Repeat with beaker C & D. They are at different temperatures.
Station 2
Repeat steps 1-5 above for KClO3. Be sure to record all temperatures and gram
amounts.

Station 3
1. Take both beakers off the hot plates and immediately put the thermometers in.
2. Record the exact temperature in which you begin to see the solid come out of the
solution as a white precipitate. Record on Data Chart.

Analysis Questions
Answer the questions below. When you have finished, submit this assignment to your teacher by the due
date for full credit.
1. Describe the relationship between Temperature and Solubility (when the solution became
saturated.) Answer: (3 points)
2. What your hypothesis correct? (1 point)
3. Compare your results with the solubility curves shown below of KCl and KClO3. How close were
your results to the actual curves? Example: for Beaker A, look at you temperature, find on graph,
follow the temperature line up until you reach the KCl curve. Then look to the left, does the number
of grams shown match your results? (4 points)
Answer:
4. Using the solubility curves below, identify the two substances in Station 3 based on your
temperatures and the amounts of solute. Example: if you got a temperature of 96 degrees for the
32 grams…then you would conclude that the substance was NaNO3. (2 points)
