ASSIGNMENTS #3: ARCHAEOLOGY REPORT

PURPOSE:
The purpose of this assignment will be to learn about archaeological discoveries that have contributed to the
known information about Western History. Students will research information about these sites in academic
articles and books, archeology journals, university websites, encyclopedias, and the UNESCO World Heritage
listings (if applicable). This research will allow students to understand how archaeology has played an extremely
important role in helping historians to understand the past and how each of us must fight to protect it. Your
assignment will consist of two parts: an annotated bibliography and the final project.
Part 1. Annotated Bibliography (10% )
Due Date: Thursday, October 29.
Students will submit a well developed annotated bibliography in the Chicago-Turabian style of all the sources
collected for the final archaeology report (minimum of 5 sources). Each source must include a brief analysis of the
source including short summary, main points, and an explanation of how it will be used in the report.
* Min. of 5 sentences per source
* Single-spaced, 11-12 pt font, 1 inch margins.
Part 2. Final Report (90%)
Due Date: Thursday, December 3
Students will choose ONE archaeological site and write a detailed report about it including the following sections:
Section 1: Historical information of the site (civilization, and how it was used during its time)
Section 2: Archaeological discovery of the site (include dates, persons or organizations that participated)
Section 3: Development of the archaeological excavations over the ages or ongoing (if applicable)
Section 4: Major discoveries at the site (any famous discoveries/artifacts?)
Section 5: Problems during archaeological digs and/or problems preserving these sites
Section 6: Historic importance of the discovery/ies? of or at the site (How has this site helped construct the
history of the particular civilization it belongs to? Has it provided new information about it?)
* Double-spaced, 11-12 font, 4-8 pages, include cover page
* Min. of 5 scholarly sources including: 1-3 journal articles, 2-4 books, 1-3 websites (with approval).
* Must use Footnote citations (Chicago-Turabian) and a Bibliography (not part of the total page count)
* Pictures and graphics encouraged. To be included in an Appendix page (not part of the total page count)
