This week we continue to look at the ambulatory market and model of care. This important shift
to outpatient settings has been seen significantly in the international model of health care. It is
very “foreign” to most international patients to be in the hospital or to go to the hospital instead
they utilize a General Practitioner (GP) or clinics.
As the United States market continues to shift to an Ambulatory model we see the effects of
capitalism and our own cultural values play out in the structures and strategies of organizations
that provide care. While shifting to a similar care delivery model the US is developing a
reinterpretation of it as well.
Physicians are on the forefront of these types of changes with administrators. Many physicians
today continue their training through MBA courses specifically designed for health care and are
very business oriented often taking top roles in organizations.
In the content area there are links to different outpatient models and information about the effects
physician leadership can have both positive and negative in this environment. Below is also a

This week respond to the discussion about the role of physicians in primary care practices and
how their behaviors, leadership, and responsibilities impact patient care, patient satisfaction,
organizational financial strategies, government payers and insurance provides. How are they
contributing to the cost containment or the cost rising of health care? What can they contribute
with more insight to the business of healthcare to promote excellent care at the lowest cost?
What unique programs or physician lead endeavors are already addressing this? Differentiate
between facility based outpatient services and commercial (stand alone) services / delivery
models.
