Apply the principles of good writing to your summaries
as well as your essays.
Summaries will have depth consisting of 2 to 3 pages (typed,
double-spaced, using 12-point Times New Roman font with standard APA margins)
based on assignment. This means the discussion you present is more than one and
a half pages and not over 3 pages in length. Do not use more than 2 quotes in
your draft. This does not include the cover page and references. An example
summary with feedback is provided in the Course Content Folder for Week One. You will submit your summaries using email in
Blackboard. See Syllabus for due dates
and assignment criteria.

Topic sentence needed. Bailey (year describes how the old fashion way of calling
transitioned to dating, which furthermore changed over the years as it entered into mainstream
America. Bailey’s goes on to describe how money was the force behind the transition of
courtship to dating. In addition, she also pointed out how courtship played such a major role in
the stature of a person within society. Today’s society is living in a new generation in terms of
etiquette. It is now the man’s financial burden for all costs that may arise during the date. What
are the talking points for your discussion that follows? Where each begins should be clear.
Addressing the definition of courtship and dating will help to further understand what
Professor Bailey was talking about. Dictionary.com defines courtships as “the wooeing of one
person from another”. According to Bailey (year), the definition of dating is when a couple
begins a conversation through the old fashion way of calling. Calling can be described as a
situation where the man asked to call the woman and if she accepted then he would go to the
woman’s house and spend time with the family. However, according to Professor Bailey, “In the
twentieth century this new style of courtship, dating, had begun to supplant the old”. Professor
Bailey also talked about how dating moved from the family parlor to public world, relocating
from family parlors and community events to restaurants, theaters, and dance halls. By taking
the dating from family parlors and into what is today’s mainstream dating worlds this required
money. Bailey states “Money-mens’s money-became the basis of the dating system and thus of
courtship” (p. #).
Men would spend countless hours within their week trying to find enough
money just to take women out on a date. Men felt the pressure that came from the woman’s
expectations to wine and dine them. These were considered “treats” on the part of men for the
women, because public dating was more expensive. In the 1930’s dating started to involve

classes of people even more so to identify the types of places to take your date. Particular women
who decided to work would end up on dates in cheap dance calls or even a movie theatre.
Women of a higher class also went on public dates; however they were more cushioned
according to the article. Public courtship of the middle and upper class involved dance halls just
as did the lower class.
In the old school system of calling, women took the initiative to call the young man, as it
was inappropriate for a man to call on a young woman without her permission. Now dating is left
more to the man’s sphere, where they hold the control and ask the women onto a date.
Furthermore, this allows the man the ability to take the women into their sphere and wine and
dine them with their money as they saw fit. The idea of money within dating led to serious
problems within the world of courtship, because is dealt more with men and their money. If men
were using their money then they had the control and the initiative within the date. This could be
seen as an exchange system. The man supports his partner, wife, or girlfriend in exchange for
serviced rendered by her whatever they may be. Dating in relation to prostitution forces women
to rely on money. A woman is selling herself to the man as if she was a commodity to purchase.
Bailey (year) demonstrates that the men were not only paying for female companionship
but they were also paying for entertainment and power. Men asked women out, and women did
not ask men out in fear of being seen as aggressive. Men were the wallet in the relationships but
women had not lost all power. There is still much controversy in today’s society about sex,
science, and etiquette in reference to men and women in this changing society that we live in.
