Over the last decade the United States Population Demographics has significantly
changed from low percentage to now increasing population. It is estimated that there will be
important demographic changes that will be experienced in the United States with the next ten
years or so. There has been a pattern which has emerged showing that there are changing trends
of birthrate in the United States as well other population factors such as immigration that is
significantly changing the American household. Immigration is termed as one of the issue that
will increase population in the American household as we move into the future.
As mentioned there are projections that the population in the United States is likely to
reach close to 450 million people in the year 2050. This is estimated to be caused as one
mentioned the immigration as well as increase in the number of people born as United States
descendants. A bigger percentage as mentioned will be from immigrants who are expected to rise
to about 20 percent of the American household in the next twenty to thirty years. it has been
noted that immigration or foreign born people have been increasing in the united states over the
last decade which is expected to reach a peak high as we move into the future.
The American growth is expected to be expanded by the increasing births in Hispanic and
Asian population as other racial groups play a much lower but significant role in growing the
population. It is also estimated that the elderly are likely to increase in the coming decades as the
baby boomers will take the center stage in the American elderly group (Stanhope and Lancaster,
2014). Most of the baby boomers will be at their old age and it is expected that they will be
doubled more than they are in the current day.
The changes in population demographic will be much contributed by the assumptions
relating to the increased immigration in the United States as well as the low number of deaths,

with also the improved birth rate among the American households. As per the current trends
these are valid assumptions but they are prone to changes due to the uncertainties and change of
behaviors for most of the households. It can also be changed by the changing immigration trends
or even a change in the policy that governs immigration.
The changing demographics in the United States are expected to bring certain
implications in the economy in many different ways. There are going to be impact in the
marketing strategies among the American companies as well as the changes in demand for
certain commodities. In the first place, the population demographics show that there will be an
increase in the number of old people. Most of the old people will increase the dependency ration
in the United States with the number of the employed being much close to the number of whom
will have passed the employment age. This means that the united state firms will have gears
towards producing most of the items that are used by the elderly more than the one used by
young generation. The demand for elderly care items is going to go a notch high than it is today.
To sustain the health of this increasing population of the elderly, it will be good for the
companies to lean towards ensuring that most of the items sold in the American market support
healthy living for the aging American population (Laurent, 2013). The United States shopping
habits is likely to change significantly due to the increasing aging. The highest percentage of the
spending will be from the aging population consisting of those of sixty years and above. The
demand for certain luxury commodities such as drinks such as beer and soft drinks is likely to go
down while the same effect will be experienced in the cloth and fashion industry associated with
the youthful population.
Most of the American companies who want to succeed in the future have to look into
their future marketing strategies. Companies will have to rethink of their advertising that will

attract the older consumers and still accommodate the young consumers as well. In addition,
most of the American will be expected to be either middle class earners or that of American
elderly dependent population. The increasing middle class means that there will low
consumptions of certain commodities in the short term as well as the long-term. The companies
must therefore stay on the lookout for these changes less they will experience losses from
changing demographic issues. The strategies made must go in line with the demographic changes
as we move into the future.
For my current luxury business that I work in, there are many changes that we will have
to cope with. At first the current demographics shows that the business has at least a high number
of aging work labor. It means that in the coming years this experienced managers and laborers
will have retired. Therefore the company has to look out for new ways of bringing and sustaining
an efficient work labor. Again there might be some changes that will be brought by the changing
consumer behavior as the population is made of aging citizens (Montgomery, 2011).
Consumption of most of luxury items will decrease in the near future. The company will have to
employ much of its time in the human care industry where the market will be higher given the
rate of increasing dependency ratio. The company will also have to provide better health and
pension benefit to the aging workforce that will sustain its wellbeing today and in future.
