Executive Summary
Lab 3 was first a continuation of lab 2 with the simulation of a queue. The difference is that in this
lab, the simulation of the queue was done using an excel spreadsheet instead of the Simio
Simulation Software. There were two different models simulated in this spreadsheet. There was
first a review of the two questions regarding the previous lab using Simio that had to do with the
difference in results between two scenarios changing the capacity and servers in the system.
The first model simulated was a system with one server with one capacity simulating 6
events. The interarrival and service time was given for the simulation. Then functions were used
to retrieve the arrival, start, waiting, and departure time of the customers going through the
system. The average number of customers in the system, queue, and utilization of the server was
determined from these results. The second simulation model is called the Monte Carlo simulation
where a sample of points in a circle within a square is used to estimate the value of pi. This
procedure uses random uniform distribution of points and areas to calculate the best estimate of
pi. The conclusion to this model was that as the sample size of points increased in this area the
estimate converged to the real value of pi.
Conclusion
From the simulations, it is clear to see that using one single server queue yields a bigger
wait time because you must wait for the previous task to be complete before starting the next.
Along with this, the service time could be greater since the server may be working longer by
completing tasks one by one. In the second model, you can see that by estimating pi, there is a
much greater chance that the true value will be reached by using a higher number of samples.
The samples of 1000 random values resulted in a much closer value to pi than samples of only
100. Also the % error decreases with increasing the sample size.
(Q3) What are the differences among the three types of the simulation methods, i.e.,
spreadsheet simulation, Monte Carlo simulation, and SIMIO simulation?
Among the three simulation methods, there are a few differences that result. The
spreadsheet simulation is a quick way to calculate arrival, departure and service times when
sample sizes are large. With bigger sample sizes, it takes more time to calculate by hand which is
why spreadsheets are more convenient. Spreadsheets allow user to perform functions on a large
number of samples and manipulate the data very easily. The Monte Carlo simulation differs from
the spreadsheet model because it is used when random numbers are generated, and in this case,
used to determine the probability that the random numbers would converge to pi. The Monte
Carlo simulation is used in uncertainty cases, as opposed to arrival, departure and service times
which are calculated exactly. It is also very different from the third simulation, the SIMIO model.
The SIMIO models a great tool to model flow or process times. The SIMIO model allows users to
mock up processes to see what the results of flows would be. All three models are used in
different ways and are all extremely helpful tools
