Executive summary
This lab is an introduction to SIMIO modeling framework by looking over a simple
project from start to finish. This lab helps in understanding what effects customer service will
witness if an increase in business production occurs. The management of Baily’s Bank is
considering a promotion that will increase business by 10%. The bank specifies that the
acceptable average time spent by a customer in the system should not exceed 15 minutes, and the
maximum customer time in the system should not exceed 30 minutes.
In every bank in the United States, the arrival time , the queueing time, processing time
and departure time affect customer satisfaction. This will consequently have an impact on the
throughput of the bank. In the model studied in this lab, Baily’s Bank has a customer flow
average of 30 per hour. The bank is opened 8 hours a day, and therefore the bank has an average
of 240 customers per day. In this model, no breaks for the tellers were specified, and therefore
they were not factored into the results.
To understand the possible impacts on this project, two bank models were put in
comparison. The first model represents current system of the bank. The parameters of this as-ismodel were put into SIMIO in order to calculate the bank current data. This data was compared
to the data from Model 2. The parameters of this as-is-model were put into SIMIO in order to
calculate the bank current data. This data was compared to the data from Model 2. Note that in
this model there is one server with three tellers, having a triangle distribution of Triangular(1.00,
3.24, 7.88), and the interarrival time given by an exponential distribution. As a result, a customer
spends 4 minutes on average in this system.
Conclusion:
The SIMIO introduction in this lab aimed to help students become familiar with the
software by exploring the basic features of the program using a real life example. Baily’s Bank
was chosen as project to be modeled to find the average customer throughput in the bank. In this
example, the average customer time in the system was less than 15 minutes, and the maximum
customer time in the system was less than 30 minutes. The total customers served per day was
240, as the three tellers worked 8 hour per day and served 30 customers per hour. In this practice,
the team members learned that SIMIO has functions that help in finding the average throughput
time which is useful to determine the desirable number of employees to be be working at a shift.
The results of the software runs show that in scenario 1, where there is only one server,
that its capacity is 3, and the throughput was 224, which is the fastest throughput time.
