Hypothesis
Crime in the society is influenced by the environment.
Many scholars have tried to explain the origin of crime within the society. Most of them
through observations and analysis of the occurrence of crime have come up with diverse views
on the causes of crime. The environment is one of the factors attributed to influence crime and
criminal behavior in the society. Review of the studies done on crime reveals that crime patterns
are distributed within certain regions in the community. Offenders prefer some escape routes
over others, and offenders from a particular area also tend to have similar traits. Studies show
that factors within the environment such as unemployment, poverty, illiteracy, and reliance on
social assistance lead to social disorganization and promote the occurrence of criminal behavior
in the community. The studies also show that juvenile delinquents appear to be localized in
certain residential areas. Physical deterioration, diverse ethnic groups, and low socioeconomic
status characterizes such areas. It, therefore, appears that there is a relation between environment
and criminal behavior in the society. Interactions of some factors within the community and the
people in it, either discourages or motivates the occurrence of crime.
