Instructions
An annotated bibliography is used to help a writer organize their references. It is
essentially a set of very formal and well-organized notes that can be used to aid in the
development of a piece of writing.
Typically an annotated bibliography would not be seen by anyone but the person
who made it, just as one’s notes from class, highlighted material in articles and books,
etc., would not be seen by anyone else.
Change the title from “Annotated bibliography” to something informative about
your topic. Also, make sure you edit the Running head material.
By the way, with the exception of this Instructions page, this document is set up
as a template that could be used for the assignment…
This instruction page should be deleted entirely.

Annotated Bibliography
The first sentence or two are a note from the student to the instructor, indicating
what the unifying theme of the articles is. It is something to help the instructor evaluate
the assignment more accurately. The student’s research question would be a good thing to
state here.
After that, just start with the annotations: Reference, Summary, and analysis…
see below.
Author names, last name then initials for each, separated by commas, with the last
two names separated by an ampersand (“&”) (publication date). Article title.
Journal title, volume number, page numbers, doi: (if available).
The first paragraph of the annotation summarizes the article. Students should
indicate the research problem and/or hypothesis (there may be more than one). Identify
the target population (the participants) and the method used to do the research. Discuss
the results and conclusions drawn by the researchers. During this overview, the student
should comment on anything that they see that could have been done better or that was
very well done. Critiquing the work is just as important as summarizing it.
The second paragraph involves the student’s thoughts about how the article fits in
with other work in the area as well as how it contributes to their own proposed study. The
student ought to comment on whether the research is credible (are the authors experts in
this area, is the journal a peer-reviewed one?). Does this article contradict or support one
of the other articles in the annotated bibliography? How? Does it support the proposed
study? Is the proposed study a logical next step? Does the proposal intend to retest the
annotated study’s findings but with a different approach to the method?

What follows is a partial example of an annotated bibliography entry. Notice that
the reference is in boldface, this is not required but it can make the bibliography easier to
follow. Notice… no first names, just initials; no credentials. Notice that the article title
is only capitalized on the first word, that the journal title is italicized, and that the volume
and page numbers are NOT preceded by “Vol.” Or “Page,” this is proper APA
referencing.
Barrera, T.L., Graham, D.P., Dunn, N., & Tend, E.J. (2013). Influence of trauma
history on panic and posttraumatic stress disorder in returning veterans.
Psychological Services, 10 (2), 168 – 176.
This research study investigated the possible impact of pre-deployment and
during-deployment traumatic experiences upon the development and severity of anxiety
disorders, namely panic disorder (PD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in
military veterans. Participants were drawn from a Veterans Administration database of
1740 veterans suffering from anxiety disorders located in the southwestern United States
(it might be interesting to replicate the study with people from other parts of the country).
Veterans responded to the Deployment Risk and Resiliency Inventory (DRRI) assessing
traumatic events experienced by the vet prior to deployment to a combat zone, during
deployment, and subsequent to deployment. The results of the study indicated that…
The authors of the study have published several other studies on the topic of
military service people and the impact of trauma, suggesting that they are experts in the
area. The study only evaluates male veterans, which could be a problem. But other
researchers, such as Lehavot, et al (2013), (see below) have looked specifically at the
potential for gender-based differences in the responses of service people to traumatic

events. This article ties in well with the proposed research in that both investigate the
impact of pre-deployment traumatic events…
After the end of all of the (three to five) annotations there should be two or more
paragraphs discussing the usefulness of annotated bibliographies in helping students,
researchers, and others in organizing their resources and developing better research ideas
and well-written papers.
