Week Three
Class,
This week, we’re diving into the Justification Report. Though
this might seem a bit scary at first, like all things, I encourage you
to take the assignment step by step. That’s why we’ve broken it
down into three, distinct parts.
When we want to justify something, we need proof. Imagine if
someone came up to you and told you that pineapple is the single
best fruit on the planet. Would you believe that person? Most of us
would not believe that person without proof. If the person then
compared pineapple to every other fruit and conveyed why it’s
perhaps more nutritional, flavorful, vitamin-packed, etc., you
might be more inclined to believe him or her.
The same approach is needed for your Justification Report. In
this assignment, you’re identifying a problem at work. You’re
then coming up with a possible solution. To do so, you’ll need to
weigh a few options, do some research, and see which idea works
best. You’ll need to provide a graph of some sort because many
people are visual learners, which means they like to see as well as
hear what you’ve got to say.
This week, you’ll create the following areas of your
assignment:
Problem Statement (for Question 1)
Overview of Alternatives (for Question 2)
Criteria (for Question 3)
Methods (for Question 4)
Let’s break them down a bit. Your problem statement tells your
organization what the problem is. For example, in the pizza party
example, the problem is that the student doesn’t know from which
pizzeria to order the pizza. The overview of alternatives simply
describes the possibilities for solving the problem. Should the class
order from Pizza Place A or from Pizza Place B? To determine the
solution, you’ve got to tell your organization what criteria you’ll
use to make your decision? Are you looking to see which pizzeria
bakes pizza the fastest or offers the most toppings? Finally, you’ll
need to let your reader know your methods for determining your
solution. Will you call the pizzerias? Will you interview past
customers?

Take your assignment step by step this week. Remember that a
good justification needs a targeted issue and a solid plan for
finding and proposing a tangible solution.
