Q1. What benefits or value do these tools (SWOT or PESTLE) offer for project managers?
How could you use both a SWOT and a PESTLE analysis together in a project – could one
be an input to the other or are they just variations of the same analysis?
In the project management exercises, PESTEL and SWOT analysis can be used to access
the risks that may be involved during the project. SWOT analysis helps in examining the strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities and threats that result from the internal activities of the projects.
PESTEL analysis helps in examining the political, environmental, social, technological,
economical and legal aspects that affect the project, all of which result from the external
environment. Both PESTEL and SWOT Analysis can be used together in a project by ensuring
that the structural operations of the project are in line with the surrounding effects such as the
government laws and regulations which may affect many aspect of the external environment. For
instance, government laws regulating the conservation of the environment and social wellbeing
can affect a project that is likely to pollute the environment and affect the livelihood of the local
community. The external success of a project originated from its internal operations since the
internal operations will obviously affect the external environment that will in turn cause more
problems. This implies that SWOT analysis is an input to the PESTEL analysis and vice versa.
This is so because in the situation where one factor of the internal environment affects the external
environment, the projects experiences a weakness or threat and in the case where one factor of the
external environment affects the internal environment, a weakness or threat is also evident.

Q2. Where you consider how testing will be affected within IT environments that adopt DevOps
or continuous delivery practices.
Due to the adoption of continuous delivery practices or DevOps in several information
technology environments, it is expected that there will be some major effects on how testing will
be done in many of the organization. The main change is that the testing will stop from being a
once during the main development and in turn will become something that is done time after time.
By adopting these practices, testing will be done as a continuous process to make sure that the
development of software’s is quick and that the building is done in way that it can always be put
into production. The whole practices test if the software is ready to be delivered (Swartout, 2014).

Q3. The book states, “Goals are formed using SMART or SMARTER.” (p. 83) explain this
in your own words. Use at least one outside reference. Include how this benefits the strategic
planning process.
A goal is “the result or achievement toward which effort is directed (Dictionary.com,
2015).” In order for goals to be most effective they need to follow the SMART guidelines.
SMART stands for goals that are Specific—they should be detail oriented, Measurable—be able
to be quantifiable, Acceptable—“accepted by those trying to achieve the goal (Stackpole &
Oksendahl, 2011),” Realistic—being willing and able to achieve the goal (Top Achievement,
2015), and Timely—the goal should have an achievable timeframe (Top Achievement, 2015). The
A has also been known to stand for Attainable or Achievable, meaning they are goals that an
organization will be able to attain (Top Achievement, 2015).
SMART can also be extended to SMARTER. According to our textbook the ER stands
for extending the capabilities of those trying to achieve the goal and Rewarding them for
achievement of the goal (Stackpole & Oksendahl, 2011). I have also found that the ER can also
represent Ethical—meaning ethical actions towards the goal and Recorded—meaning ecording
progress towards the goal (Haughey, 2015).
The whole purpose of a strategy is to set goals and move towards achievement of the
goals. SMART and SMARTER goals set up specific guidelines to aid organizations in a technique
to ensure that the goals that are set up through the strategic planning process will be achievable.
Following the SMART process helps to ensure that the strategies created aren’t vague, that they
are easier to monitor, that they are easier to identify if a goal is missed, that they are easier to
identify successes, and that they can break a large strategy down to smaller bites which makes the
strategy easier to achieve (Walters, 2012).
Q4. On page 74 of the Security Strategy book, there are 12 questions you should consider
before starting a strategic plan. Pick three of these to discuss on the week 4 discussion board.
Why are these questions important? How do they assist in the development of the strategic
plan?
When looking at strategic planning it’s very important to consider what questions to ask
at the beginning of your strategic plan. The text book lists twelve questions that one should
consider prior to starting a strategic plan. I am going to examine five questions more in depth.
The first question I feel is important to have an answer to prior to starting a strategic plan
is: who are the appropriate people who need to engage in the planning effort? When you a sitting
down to start a strategic plan it is important that you know who all to include in the planning
process. Knowing who to include in the process is important as the group working together to
create the plan ultimately have the final say on what goes in that plan. If a group is left out, then it
means certain areas are not addressed when they really should be.
The second question I feel is important is: What constraints do we have around the
planning process? This question is important because you cannot start a project unless you know
what the constraints you have to follow. Some constraints to consider are time, personnel,
resources, information, etc. You cannot successfully start a project unless you know the constraints
for that particular project. If you do start a project without knowing this information, it can be a
recipe for massive failure as you don’t know vital information.
The third question that I feel is important is: Who will get the plan when it is complete?
Part of the strategic planning process is to know who will get the finalized strategic plan. If you
don’t know who the plan is going to you could do something such as not send it when it is
completed, send it to the wrong person, etc. This could cause the plan to be delayed in being rolled
out which could cause other issues. It’s important for any project you know who the project will
be handed off to before you start.
The fourth question that I feel is important is: What other bigger picture do we need to
align to or be aware of? When creating a strategic plan, you need to be aware of other bigger
pictures. Your strategic plan should align with other plans that are in place as they need to work
together. Not being aware of those other bigger pictures can cause things to be overlooked and/or
forgotten.
The fifth question I feel is important is: Are the right stakeholders from both the internal
organization and external enterprise involved in the strategic planning process? This goes hand in
hand with the first question I mentioned regarding needing to know the appropriate people are
engaged in the process. The strategic planning process should also include both internal and
external stakeholders. Stakeholders should be included in the strategic planning process as they
can help to provide valuable input that can help you in the strategic planning process.
Q5. After looking through some other posts, I tried picking out some questions that I
didn’t see. I am going to talk on questions 2, 8, and 9.
Are the right stakeholders from both the internal organization and external enterprise involved in
the strategic planning process?
First, looking at it from an external point of view, many times (not all) stakeholders are the
ones funding different projects. Having them be involved in the strategic planning process is most
likely comforting for both them and the organization. Having the stakeholder’s input is critical
especially if looking to gain approval or to move ahead with the process. Having the right external
stakeholders involved leads to the correct consulting that may be needed. Internally, having the
right stakeholders involved is a must. They have to be the right people that will get the job done
and get it done correctly. Internal stakeholders will also make sure that the plan moves in the right
direction.
What other bigger picture do we need to align to or be aware of?
When dealing with extended enterprises, thinking of the bigger picture is what joins everything
together. You must think of the bigger picture in order to see where multiple plans can meet. This
goes a long a little with my current employer. Since we are spread across the world we have many
different partnerships to think of. Being an agricultural company, we have a specific networked
company for corn, one for grain, one for soy beans, ect. and that is in each country. So when
planning, we have one overall plan that is made up of a lot of smaller plans. When one company
is beginning their own strategic planning process, they need to think of the bigger picture and how
it can tie in with the company’s plan and how it will improve the company overall.
Is our present strategic plan relevant?
I see this as a very key question in the planning process. If your strategic plan isn’t relevant,
why are you doing it? At a previous job, we would get so far along in the process without every
asking why. “Why are we doing this? Is this relevant to where we want our company to go?” was
never really a question asked. It was a small department, so it was one or two people coming up
with the plan and going with it. Needless to say the projects took much longer and were not as
well done as they could have been had someone simply said, “Is this relevant?”.
