  Management
of IT is closely related to management of non-IT functions. Management is a process by which an organization achieves its goals through the
use of resources (people, money, energy, materials, space, and time). All
managers have three basic roles:
Interpersonal roles: figurehead, leader, liaison; Informational roles: monitor,
disseminator, spokesperson, analyzer; Decisional
roles: entrepreneur, disturbance handler, resource allocator,
negotiator. In order to make good decisions valid and relevant information is
required. The information is in the form of database, data mart, data warehouse
etc. Data
should be of high quality, meaning that they should be accurate, complete,
timely, consistent, accessible, relevant, and concise. Businesses run on data
that have been processed into information and knowledge. Managers then apply
this knowledge to business problems and opportunities. Businesses transform
data into knowledge and solutions in several ways. So in every phase of
decision making, managers require data which is processed by IT person. Hence
it is necessary to coherently manage both IT and non IT functions in an
organization.  Also sometimes managers
need to radically redesign their business processes to lower costs and increase
quality in order to become more competitive. Information technology is the key
enabler for such radical change. If the IT managers are non-IT managers go in
different directions, then it would be very difficult to take the right
decision at the right time. Firms rely on information system so heavily that,
in some cases, when they are not working (even for a short time), an
organization cannot function. In addition, these information systems are very
expensive to acquire, operate, and maintain. Therefore, it is essential to manage
them synchronously with the other non-IT functions. This helps the managers to
correctly use the Information Technology in the decision making process.
