Extra Credit Assignment
Cuba and china are not the only country facing this problem. There are
so many other countries whom are facing the same problem and we can
take the United States of America as an example. The USA is facing this
problem because the younger generation only have one or two kids or
don’t want to have kids at all, while the older people number are
growing tremendously and living longer and longer. Since the older
people are living longer and their number is increasing, we need
facilities and people in the health care filed to take care of them.
The government and individuals coming together as a community or
even as a country, we can solve this problem together. There are some
work being done about this issue, but not enough. There are more work
we can to make this better. One is awareness, people are not aware
unless they are old them self or they know someone old and have a hard
time in their day to day living. The government should find a way of
using some of the tax money and build a nursing home, assisted living
and so on.
For the service provision, getting enough funding should be their first
goal. Having an enough fund can open the door for many opportunities
meaning building long term care facilities, giving incentive (scholarship)
to study something in the health care filled, buying a newer equipment
with a newer technology, and getting as many volunteers as possible.
Discussion 6
The one child policy of China was to avoid too many children to take care of them. However, this
policy established another burden which is, the aging generation has no one to take care of them! On
the other hand while the health care at china started to be very expensive, at national level china
developed a prevention program to help prevent chronic diseases as a first step in taking care of the
aging generation (Kaneda, 2006). Furthermore, Chinese culture holds the oldest son and his wife
responsible for taking care of his parents and this will put a heavy load on the household to take care of
the ageing parents. Also, the Long-term care system is not popular at China yet, neither the welfare to
assist with the expenses. Therefore, government has a lot of things to do. First start the long term care
facilities and train the direct workforces to take care of elderly. Second make sure that there are enough
funds to cover the needs for these facilities.
In an international Convention of Health held on 4/21/2015 at Cuba, an interview with
Humberto Arencibia the director of the center of research In Havana stated in the article titled”Health
2015 to discuss on aging, Cuba” that there is a plan to participate with other countries to work together
to face the aging population health problems. Also, he added that they already have specialists in
Geriatrics and a well trained workforce to deal with this problem. However the article did not mention
that there are any long term facilities that were prepared or that there are enough funds to cover the
expenses. It seems like that Cuba with the assistance of other countries is ready, and hence communist
are always reserve the rest of the information for themselves!
There are a lot of models in the U.S that are way ahead of China and Cuba in this field. Long-term
facilities with different purposes like nursing homes, assisted living, adult day services, and senior
centers are different types of long term facilities that have a lot of experience on how to take care of the
elderly. These facilities are full of trained and certified staffs and direct workforce that know very well
what they are doing. Furthermore, these models of long-term facilities could be adapted by China or
Cuba and implement in their courtiers to help improve the aging population health care system. Also,
they could start aging authorities such as an aging department that could be in charge of the elderly
legal, social, and health needs.
