“Dream Variations” by Langston Hughes and “The Tropics in New York” by Claude
McKay both depict a longing for another place. What are the places and what do they
represent?
In the “Dream Variations” The speaker dreams of a place where she/he can freely express themselves. The speaker
dreams of a place where he/she can dance freely under the warm sun. This symbolizes the speaker longing for freedom and
kindness and acceptance from the community. The speaker also dreams of a night that comes tenderly or gently. This
represents the speakers longing for safety and peace. Although no one is sure where exactly this place is, it is a sure thing
wherever it is, Hughes is talking about a place that is peaceful, safe , free and accepting.
In “The Tropics in New York” the speaker comes across a shop were he sees fruits lined up and he begins to get
nostalgic about his home land. He thinks of all the good things his home land has and he feels ” a wave of longing through
my body.” The speaker then “hungry for old, familiar ways,” bows his head down and cry. Through this poem Claude
McKay is telling his and others longing to go back to were they originally belonged. A place they call home, Africa.

In Langston Hughes’s poem “I, Too,” the speaker refers to himself as “the darker
brother.” In “A Black Man Talks of Reaping,” the speaker refers to the white man’s children
as “my brother’s sons.” Why is it significant that the poets used the word brother? How do
the two poems use the word differently?
During the times in which both of the poems were written was the time, blacks were segregated against the white.
American society had the separate but equal rule and separated black folks from the white folks. The fact that both poets
used the word brother is significant because through their poems they were fighting against segregation and working for
integration. By using the word brother they were working for equality of the two races. They were trying to make people
realize that no matter the color they were all humans and they were all brothers. In ” I, Too” Hughes’s the speaker talks
about how he the darker brother sings America too. He is telling that he is also same as them and that he is a good person.
The speaker anticipates for the time when he, the darker brother, can sit in the kitchen with all the other and not leave when
someone comes. Hughes is using the word brother to indicate that he, too, is also American.
In “My Brother’s Sons” the poet talks about the unfairness farmers deal with everyday. The speaker in the poem
talks about how he works really hard to sew his seeds and plow his land but in the end others get, or as he puts it ” my
brother’s sons are gathering stalk and root.” The speaker is talking about the unfairness he faces because after all his work
his children are left hungry while the “brother’s sons” feed on his hard work. His used the word brother to indicate the
things his fellow humans did to him. There is bitterness in his tone when he uses the word, to indicate the prejudice he faces
from his fellow American.

What role does freedom play in the poems from this unit? Choose three of the poems
and describe how the poet uses imagery to depict freedom or the desire for it.
Freedom plays a really great role in all the poems in this unit. It is actually the main theme for most of them and
other poems indirectly address the issue. For example if we look in to the poem “Sympathy” the poet used the
caged bird to depict the desire for freedom of African Americans. The caged bird symbolized African Americans
and its actions and desires represented their desires and efforts. The caged bird is seen to beat it wings in an
effort to get out of the cage, but only ends up hurting its self. This symbolized the struggle of African Americans
to gain freedom and how they usually ended up getting hurt. The caged bird also sings, not song of joy but song
of prayer. This again represents the prays of African Americans to be free. Another example can be ” I, Too” by
Hughes. The speaker in the poem talks about how he is send out to eat in the kitchen when a guest comes,
implying the segregation in the American society at that time. By the end of the poem the speaker hopes for a
time in which he won’t be sent to the kitchen and eat comfortably with the others. This means that the he is
hoping for a time in which he will be free and treated equally by his fellow Americans. Third poem we can used
as an example is “Dream Variations” again by Hughes. In this poem the speaker dreams of a place where he
could dance and whirl under the warm sun and rest under a tree when a night comes gently. This place
symbolizes the kind of place African Americans longed for, a place where they could express themselves freely
and be safe.
