The process of developing a mission statement
follows standard group practices.
All in attendance are placed into small groups of 5-7
people.
Each participant develops their own Mission
statement for the organization.
Each participant reads their statement, followed by
discussion to achieve one mission that includes the
key areas of each, or that all in the group agree on.
This process and discussion is team building.

The Mission Statement IS the PURPOSE of the
organization. When developed as a group, all
members of the group feel that they had some part
in development of the Mission, and that they
understand and value it as a guide for the
organization.
Once established, the Mission Statement becomes

There are several key features to understand about
Mission statements:
1) There is no “right or wrong” mission. There are good or
poor missions for an organization, and organizations
should constantly examine and reconsider their mission.
2) Each organization creates its own purpose and emphasis,
expressed through its mission. That can and will change
over time.
3) Any organization (including you as an individual) that
does not have a Mission or purpose will not be effective
or efficient in its development.

areas where action or work must be completed to
meet the Mission.
One way to identify goals is to create a
comprehensive mission, and then develop a goal

Like a mission, a goal is a statement of purpose or
description of work in a general area that must be
completed to meet the Mission.
We usually try to create between 3-5 goals for an
organization that cover all aspects of the
organization (broad areas).
Goals state only the “What” (not why or for whom).
Each goal should have clarity, including the ability to
know when the goal is being met.
