In Praise of the F Word
Mary Sherry argues in the In Praise of F Word, that the children of today are
not getting the quality of education they deserve from their institutions of learning. She points
out that many scholars pass through the whole education system just because they were good
kids and created fewer problems in classroom (Sherry 97). As such, the problem seems to
extend further into their future when employers are unable to hire some of them because they
lack the basic skills. However, I disagree with Sherry’s claim that teachers and parents need
to allow more students to fail in order for them to succeed.
Primarily, students should not be allowed fail for them to be successful in
order to favor the feeble ones. Apparently, learners master skills differently when it comes to
studying in class or handling their homework. Some will pass excellently whereas others are
still meant to fail even if they do similar tests repeatedly. Therefore, allowing more scholars
to fail for them to succeed is a policy that will give no hope to the underperforming students.

Subsequently, students should not be allowed to fail as this can increase the
number of school dropouts. Notably, low-performing students may become discouraged with
their studies and think of quitting school as an option (Sherry 99). Instead, learners should be
assessed on the best style of coaching for them so that teachers can apply them appropriately.
For instance, a child might have gotten the basic skills taught in class but not mastered it. For
this reason, failing the student will not help the scholar improve in any way.
Additionally, the government itself is trying so hard to minimize failing
among students. Principally, it is aware of the numerous negative consequences likely to be
encountered in case a student fails and is not given a desirable grade. Children need to be
credited with good grades despite their weakness so that they can be on the right track and
have a promising future. For instance, scholars that do have high school diplomas will have
numerous doors of job and business opportunities opened to them. Consequently, they will
avoid most of the challenges and life barriers; thus, live a quality and reasonable life.
Finally, teachers should not allow students to fail since the chief purpose of
education is mainly to see that scholars gain and acquire essential knowledge from learning
institutions. Tests are meant to determine whether students understood what they were taught
in class or not. Therefore, failing students when they miss a given mark will signify that they
never went through the system of education and have no basic skills. Moreover, it may be
irrelevant failing scholars because the reason for their failure maybe due to legitimate reasons
such as not understanding a subject or poor teaching skills used by a tutor; hence; a sign of
punitive sanctions which do not measure up at the end of the day.
To sum up, it is clear that failing students in order for them to succeed seem
not be a good option for any school curriculum. Although the idea of tutors failing students
would help them prepare adequately for their future endeavors, students join schools and
colleges with the hope of passing and acquiring essential skills and grades. For this reason,

failing them would not solve the problem but rather shatter their dreams in life especially to
the underperforming ones. Moreover, failing is a negative term in most students life and
should not be used in the present school system.
