Completing the Source Analysis Table
Essays from the Minister of Defense
Your Source Analysis Table should be TYPED into the Word document (table) that
is provided on Blackboard. If you have any questions about downloading the file
or any other aspect of filling out the SAT, please email me.
Consider the questions below when filling in the cells. Do not use quotations; fill
in the table in your own words.
Explain and draw a deduction:
* What do you conclude from the information in this column?
Are there any problems?:
* How would the information in the column be problematic?
Completing the Response Paper
This response paper is the first in this course for which you will write a full,
formal essay. In your essay, you will answer this question:
Does you think the revolution Huey P. Newton is describing will be
successful?
Your paper will have five paragraphs:
In the first paragraph, you will introduce your reader to the topic. You could
discuss the revolutionary era of the 1960s. It may be helpful to draw connections
between radicalism then and now. It should conclude with a thesis statement
that, in one sentence, summarizes your answer to the question above. Minimum
length for this paragraph should be five sentences.
In your second paragraph, you should explain why the need for revolution
in the 1960s. It must also begin with a topic sentence that explains the
significance of revolutionary groups like the BPP, SNCC, SCLC, and RAM. Minimum
length: four sentences.
In your third and fourth paragraphs, you will answer the question. These
two paragraphs should be at least five sentences in length each and begin with a
topic sentence that, not only summarizes the point of the paragraph, but ties the
paragraph back to the thesis statement. They should also use the evidence
sandwich technique to tie the specifics from the speeches to your topic
sentences.
On this essay, you also will include a concluding paragraph that does more
than restate all of your previous points. It should show your reader the
connection between the points you made and the significance of revolution in the
60s and how it affects us today. Try not to be repetitive. This paragraph must be
four or more sentences in length and begin with a topic sentence.
Your paper must be typed, double-spaced, with your name at the top of the
first page. It must be written entirely in your own words. If you quote from the
source put the page number in parentheses.
