1. What was Marx’s purpose in writing this essay? Does he succeed in getting his point across?
Marx’s purpose for writing this essay is to point out the harms of a waged labor on the spirit and being of a
worker. He is saying that when the worker gets paid to produce a good, the good becomes something alien
to him because when he is done making it, it belongs to it’s employer. According to Marx, when producers
produce goods, that good has a connection with them but when they are paid to do it, that connection
disappears and that work becomes a mere way of gaining income. Marx successfully expresses his point in
the essay. He uses phrases like specie-being and conscious-being to convey his point properly and make
people understand the effects of waged labor
2. What does Marx mean to convey by the term species-being? Does this concept help you to understand
estrangement and alienation more clearly?
By using the term species-being Marx is saying that humans are different than animals because their labor isn’t
estranged they have the ability and desire to work in their own sphere on something that brings meaning to their
life and makes them happy. But once that labor and invested on something that doesn’t mean anything to them,
they stop becoming species-being and start acting like animals which are compelled to work for their mere
existence. This term is helpful in understanding estrangement and alienation more clearly because it shows
what humans have before they start selling their labor and what they get once they start doing waged labor.
3. Do Marx’s claims about estrangement and alienation still hold true today? Explain.
Yes, they are still true, because paid labor still exist. Whether they are educated workers or uneducated workers
people still get employed in companies and factories and get paid for the time and effort they put in to make
a product that belongs to their employers. Just like Marx said those people lose the connection with the
products they make and the work they do becomes forced labor because they are doing it compelled by
something rather than as part of their purpose of life.
4. Are there some jobs that don’t fit Marx’s claims? If so, what are they, and why don’t they lead to
estrangement and alienation? If not, why are estrangement and alienation part of all forms of labor?
There are also jobs that don’t fit Marx’s claims. Those jobs are jobs where people produce products that don’t
belong to their employer but themselves. Artists for example create their masterpieces themselves and for
their own purposes. They have connection with their products because they directly benefit from it. This job
doesn’t lead to estrangement because what they are making doesn’t belong to other people.
5. Does Marx’s essay help illuminate any of your own work experiences? Can you relate to his discussion?
Why or why not?
No my experience but my mother’s experience. Through his essay I can understand why she was seems so
lifeless when she was working at this tailoring store. It was because she felt no connection or what-so ever
when she was making the product and the whole routine was just a way to merely earn a living. She wasn’t
as happy and lively as she was when she making cloths for us. I’m guessing that was because the cloths
she was making at the store were “something -alien” to her.
