Introduction
In this final paper, I will be comparing the different philosophies and tactics, employed by the
two groups, the Black Panther Party, and the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, in
the African American struggle for civil rights in the 1960s. It seeks to study the differences a
well as the similarities in the approaches of the two groups as discussed by Joseph Jamal, in the
book Panther Baby and John Lewis, in the book March. The paper will also shade light to
struggle that took place in ensuring that the dreams of an in discriminant society.
Book Summary
Panther Baby by Joseph Jamal
The writer presents to us the various challenges that faced the black in the 1960s. The writer,
Joseph Jamal, joined the Black Panther Party at a tender age of 15 years. Later after joining the
Party, he was sentenced to 12 years in Leavenworth Penitentiary because of helping a fugitive
Panther member. In his book, brings to light he various happenings that took place that were
against the Panthers. His main theme of discussion is racism, where we see the blacks being
discriminated against in so many ways.
During his time, the blacks were associated with every evil thing that happened. In the case of
any robbery happening in a neighborhood, the blacks in that locality were the first suspects in the
robbery case. The author also brings other themes in his writing such as police brutality, drug
abuse, and disregard to prisoners’ rights as well as lawlessness.
March by John Lewis
FINAL PAPER
3
The writer, John Lewis narrates to us his story as an activist. At the start, we see him as a young
boy looking after chicken at their home in Alabama. Later in his life, we see him gaining interest
on the current affairs, when he was a student, although this was against his parents wish. He
wanted to be actively involved in everything that was happening around that time, and that was
the base for his life as a civil rights activist.
He went to the North with his uncle, Carter, who was the only person in the family that
supported Lewis dream as a human rights activist. He then participated in several sit-ins after
being an active member of the Baptist church. The philosophy of the student sit-ins was passive
resistance an implementation of Martin Luther King’s philosophy. After conducting several sitins, Lewis, and his fellow activists groups were arrested and jailed for disturbing peace in the
society. This magnified the number of sit-ins across the states that were coupled with the demand
for the release of the arrested students. Later, after they are released, we see the first store serving
the blacks that served to bring hope to the dreams of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating
Committee
Contrasting the philosophies of the two groups
The two groups under evaluation, the Black Panther Party discussed in Panther Baby and the
Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee discussed in March, had contrasting philosophies
in their operations. The Black Panther Party believed in the active fighting for their rights. They
used force in seeking attention and liberation of the Panthers. In the Panther Baby, Joseph Jamal
writes,”…nobody was badder than the Panthers…” this was due to the magnitude of
determination that they had towards the termination of racial discrimination. They would realize
the end of racism by all means even if it meant waging a physical fight.

As a form of identity and so that they could appear as men of no joke, they wore black berets,
black leather jackets and also carried black guns. These served to show how serious they were
about the revolution they were after. Jamal describes the time like that with a revolutionary
magic spell in which everything appeared to be possible up to and including the victory over the
oppressor. The kind of resistance offered by the Panthers was active in that they paid violence
for violence and could not sit back in silence and see the Panthers oppressed.
On the contrary, the approach employed by the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee
towards the realization of a racism-free society is different. The student movement strategies
were inspired by Martin Luther King Jr’s philosophy of passive revolution. This revolution had it
that, so as to defeat the oppressor, the oppressed should not use force against the oppressor but
win them by doing good things. According to Martin Luther, in search of social justice, the
oppressed is not supposed use either physical or psychological violence. Lewis and his team
never used active violence in their search for social justice. Their strategy involved conducting
several sit-ins in stores that served only whites. The racists managing the stores could not allow
blacks to be served at the front counters and Lewis, and his group wanted to defy this racism act.
The increasing sit-ins made, what he calls “the rough element in the white community,” react in
violence to the protesters conducting the sit-ins.
Similarities between the two philosophies
The two philosophies, active resistance used by the Panthers and the passive resistance used by
the Students Committee, in the liberation of the blacks from discrimination had one major
similarity. The similarity is that they were all headed to the same goal. They wanted a society
free from racial discrimination. The sit-ins wanted to see a society in which all blacks and whites

could be served in any store regardless of their color. On the other hand, the Panthers movement
vowed to fight actively towards the stopping of the oppression of the blacks in the society by the
police. The two philosophies seem to be built to attack the same enemy though in different ways.
Application of deontology and utilitarianism school of thought
Deontology
Deontology is a school of thought that judges the morality by adherence to the set laws, rules,
and regulations. By application of this school of thought to the activities of the two groups, we
can highlight a very important difference between them. Looking at the activities of the Panthers
group, we see that it broke so many rules of the land. Firstly, group members owned guns that
were against the law of the land. They also broke into violence and led the young kids into
abusing drugs, act against child rights. Their vow of self-defense threatened the police in
performing their duties of controlling strikes. Therefore, according to this school of thought, this
group was wrong in its actions.
On the other hand, the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee used a totally different
approach. They did not use violence in any way. We should not confuse the sit-ins to unlawful
acts. This is because, according to the judge who ruled their case, the law did not deny anyone
from being served from any place. This clearly indicates that this group was not going against
the law in any way. The only thing that they were doing was to fight for the rights of the
oppressed, the back. Therefore, as per this school of thought, this group was right in its actions.
Utilitarianism
FINAL PAPER
6
In this school of thought, we judge the morality of an action based on the results of the action.
By applying it to the activities of the Black Panthers Party as well as the Student Non-Violent
Coordinating Committee, we see that both groups were morally upright. This is because; the
result of their actions is the liberation of the blacks from racial discrimination as well as granting
of equal rights to both blacks and whites. Since the result is a desirable thing for both of them
and the society at large, then, in this case, utilitarianism defines the activities of both groups as
right.
Personal ethical reasoning
In my opinion, I feel that both groups were ethically right in their carrying out the operations.
This is because they were doing it is as to save themselves, their families, friends as well as the
future generations from racial discrimination. They had faced a lot of physical and psychological
torture from their oppressors including killings, in the name of killing the demon on the back of
the people of color; being put in jail for crimes they never committed and lack of lawyers to help
them in courts; denial of service and education as well as police brutality against people of color.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the practice of racial discrimination was there and a lot us been done towards a
racism-free society. Everyone has a responsibility towards the development of a society that
embraces race equality and respects human rights. A totally free society starts with you and me.
It is our society; let us make it the best.
