Running head: THE BOSTON BOMBING
The Boston marathon bombing was a case of laxity on the part of law enforcement
authorities and would not have occurred in the first place is stringent surveillance measures had
been taken. This raises the question as to the exact extent to which the government has the
mandate to monitor the activities of the citizens. Surveillance is a heated topic of debate which
has garnered proponents as well as opponents in equal measure. The perpetrator of the Boston
marathon bombing claims to have learned how to make a bomb from an al Qaeda affiliated
website. Al-Qaida is an organization which has been at the forefront of global terrorism for over
a decade now since the September 11 attacks on the United States. It is an undeniable fact that
had law enforcement been monitoring affiliate websites they would have easily been drawn to
the perpetrators of this heinous crime and maybe intervened and stopped the disaster in its
entirety.
There are a lot of lessons learned from the Boston marathon bombing. The first and
perhaps most important lesson is that radicalization can occur within American soil and does not
necessarily have to be instigated by a foreign organization. The perpetrator of the Boston
bombing claimed to have no connections to any foreign body or organization and that his
radicalization was self-driven. This points to the fact that law enforcement agency have to
dedicate a portion of their manpower to monitoring American citizens in order to ensure that
such cases of self-radicalization are curbed during the early stages. Another important lesson
that can be learned from this dreadful incident is to dispel the cliché that tends to associate,

almost exclusively, terrorism with people of Arabic descent. This has been a cliché that has led
to a lot of hostility against people of Arabic descent in the United States. These bombing,
however, served to show that any person with any ethnic background can choose to be a terrorist
and bring untold harm on innocent people. Another lesson learned is the need to give law
enforcement agencies the capacity to monitor citizens in the United States without necessarily
violating their privacy or constitutional rights.
