I think that it is ill advised to say one way or another that California’s history is either accurate or
inaccurate. There are so many different facets of history, both locally and with the state as a whole,
that it’s is too broad of a question to be able to answer definitively. These facets include politics,
economics, culture, and the list goes on. I do believe that we, as natives of California, have a
tendency to romanticize our history. Whether it’s with the Missions or the Gold Rush, I think that we
feel that our history is made up of several key special events. I think it’s important that we recognize
that the history of California up to this point has been an extremely long and complicated process; we
need to dig deeper in order to fully understand our history.
Another point of note is the fact that our history, has, for the most part, been written by rich white
men. This left everyone else, poor white men, women, and ethnic minorities as unfairly marginalized
and out of the history books. Social change has played a huge factor in this aspect recently. “Ideas
about race, ethnicity, and gender roles have also changed dramatically since the 1950s, requiring
reevalutation of traditional topics in California history, from the missions, to the Gold Rush, to
progressivism, to the World Wars 1 and II, and beyond. New ethnic and feminist organizations have
demanded correction of historical stereotypes and acknowledgement of the struggles and
achievements of women and minorities. These efforts have resulted in new publications,
reorganization of museum exhibits, and rethinking of public school programs.” With the changing
social tide, we are able to go back and look at California’s history from a new perspective. This forces
us to both add and undoubtedly revise many aspects of our history.
In a similar vein, I think that it’s important that historians are now changing the question, rather than
the answer as far as interpreting California’s history goes. Historians are now taking an
interdisciplinary approach to understanding our history. Furthermore they are looking at California
from a more holistic perspective, as it relates to the United States and to the rest of the world. Also,
“Attention to previously overlooked sources, such as diaries, court files, census records, photographs,
and archeological evidence, has resulted in a flood of new information about the past. Armed with
fresh materials, broader professional interests, and sharper tools of analysis, state historians are
testing old assumptions.”
All in all, I think that we can’t really say whether California’s history is accurate or inaccurate, because
we are still finding new information. With the combination of progressive social reform, a new frame of
mind, and of course new technology, I think that we definitely need to both revise and add to our
history.

How has/does the geography of California influence(d) its development? (Helped or hindered)
Topography of every region always influence this region development. California landscape is referred
as very dynamic, the rivers, oceans, mountains, deserts, all this we can find here.
Oceans winds have huge impact on weather, and rainfall. Temperature between North and South of
California are different “The northwest coast has one of coolest average summer high temperatures
(rarely more than 70 degrees F) and one of the highest average annual rainfalls (more than one
hundred inches) in the contiguous United States. Yet the Imperial Valley is one of the hottest and
driest places in the Western Hemisphere, with summer temperatures in excess of 120 degrees and an
annual rainfall of of less than tree inches” (R. Rice, 14).
Our state is only one with high mountains, deserts and sea lines. Mostly development of California was
imposed by region geography.
State of California has natural resources which helped Natives to survive. The North is rich with water,
minerals and great environment for hunting. Enormous resources brought immigrants who helped to
develop technologies. “On the basis of a prolific and distinctive natural endowment, by the 1900s
Californians had built their state into the most populous, diverse, productive, and wealthiest region in
the Americas” (R. Rice, 22).
However, the topography of California has been problematic, because of scare water supplies on a
South part. Moreover, the isolation from the other parts by mountains and deserts also had impact on
development. To balance between water demand and water supplies, what is very essential to
agriculture, industrial growth, the dams and reservoirs were built.
Moreover, the our state has natural devastating earthquake, land slides, and drought or floods.
However, the people of California find the ways to leave and develop own culture.
I think we have the best place to leave, weather, redwoods up the Northern California, ocean, all in
one great state.
California geography in many ways helped development of the area, also is very rich in resources
state. California as a state can supply all aspects and needs of people living here. Only one problem is
our water resource. Delivering water to South part become extremely expensive, and with growing
demand is more then problematic. However, with new technologies this problem should be overcome
in near future.
As of today California is most populated state in United States. Climate has hot and dry summers, and
winters with moderate rainfall. Coast cities and area has cooler summers with overcast compare to
inland very how weather during summer.
