Research Paper Instructions
What is a research paper?
A research paper is one in which you have identified a topic, have researched what others have written
about that topic, and at some point (usually the end of your paper) have taken a position of your own about
elements of the topic. This position is the basis for your paper’s thesis statement (more on this later). You
support your thesis by presenting referenced information from reliable secondary sources, such as books,
periodicals, journals, newspapers, on-line databases, web sites, etc. Important Note: Wikipedia is not an
acceptable research source… ever. All referenced material, whether paraphrased or quoted, must be cited
properly in MLA format.
All research papers must contain proper MLA in-text citation as well as a Works Cited page. This is
a standard college-level writing requirement. There are writing resources available to you on our
class Moodle page.
For additional help on writing your research papers, please visit the SBCC Writing Center located in
the Cartwright Learning Resources Center. This is the building on the West Campus closest to the
footbridge. Walk into the building and enter the CLRC to the left. The library is to the right.
Hours: Mon. – Thur.: 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Fri.: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Research Paper TOPIC Instructions
Your research topic is to be an in-depth legal and social analysis of America’s treatment of a
historically recognized minority group. A minority is sub-group that is not a politically dominant voting
majority of the total population in a given society. The term typically refers to a socially subordinate group
(in terms of race, language, nationality, religion and/or culture). Typical examples include race
minorities, immigrants, and sexual minorities (gay, lesbian, transgender, etc.).
You should develop a thesis statement based upon your topic.
The thesis statement summarizes the main point of your paper. The thesis is normally found at the end
of the paper’s introductory paragraph(s). It is usually a single sentence and acts as a guide to let your
audience know the central idea of your research and to know what to expect in the body of your paper.
Your thesis statement should be specific—it should cover only what you will discuss in your paper and
should be supported with specific evidence.
Example: What has been the legal and social treatment of (racial group, women, immigrants, gays and
lesbians, etc.) in the United States?

Research Paper
This assignment is worth a possible 100 points. Your final paper must be at least 1800 words in length
(1800 words is considered “average” for grading purposes), excluding your Works Cited page, and
include the following information.
1. Introduction
A. Identify/explain your topic. You should include a thesis statement. Example: What has been the legal
and social treatment of (racial group, women, immigrants, gays and lesbians, etc.) in the United States?
B. Describe your reason for selecting your topic. (What aspects of the topic do you find interesting:
legal, historical, sociological, psychological, political, etc.)
2. Facts – This will be the bulk of your paper
A. History, laws, policies, statistics, examples, etc. Note: As a law class, you must necessarily
focus on the legal treatment of your selected group. For example, if you chose African
Americans, you would want to include Jim Crow laws.
B. Court Cases: As a law class, you must necessarily focus on a legal analysis of your group. As
such: You must include at least four actual cases that have affected your chosen group.
1. Clearly identify the official court case name: i.e., “Brown v. Board of Education.” It is
not acceptable to just refer to a case you may have read about in an article.
2. Describe and explain how your cases have specifically affected your group, for good or
for bad.
C. Conclusion – your thoughts based upon your research.
3. Identify at least four sources (only one textbook) in proper Works Cited format.
Your final paper will be graded on the depth and rigor of your research, continuity of ideas, critical
thinking, MLA format, and college-level writing.
Special Note: Any final paper without proper MLA format will automatically fail. No exceptions.
There are numerous links on our Moodle page to assist students who need help with their writing or
MLA format. I am also willing to proof read reports up to four days before the due date.
