Your second short paper builds upon the work you began when generating 3-5 observations,
questions, and discussion prompts regarding Ellert Dahl’s article concerning the reliquary of Saint
Foy. In section, you will have discussed Dahl’s arguments, as well as a number of open-ended
topics about relics and reliquaries, and you are now tasked with responding to some of those ideas
touched upon in section.
You may want to consider some of the following themes for your paper:







What is the relationship between relics and the sculptures that can house them? What is
the relationship between the statue housing a saint’s relics and that saint as alive and acting
from Heaven?
According to Dahl, what does a reliquary sculpture like that of Sainte Foy ultimately
represent? Does the statue of Sainte Foy seem to you to look like the saint must have
looked? If not, how could it be considered an effective representation of her?
Why do so many of the statues from this period seem to have wide, staring eyes?
What is the relationship between meaning and material in such sculpture?
Was the Church as an institution entirely happy with or comfortable with the devotional
cults that grew up around the sculpture of Sainte Foy? Why or why not?
How were these statues ultimately justified from a theological point of view?
Would medieval Christians have considered Ste Foy to be an idol? Why or why not?
You should engage with the arguments presented in Dahl’s article, whether you chose to cite his
