Analyzing the “A Good Man Is Hard to Find”
“A Good Man Is Hard to Find” begins with a typical traditional American family being
challenged by the grandmother who doesn’t want to travel to Florida. She has read a newspaper
about criminal news which was happening in Florida. However, when they were finally on the
way, they got a car accident and met the incredible crazy killer Misfit who is on the escapeway for
Florida. When the grandmother were going to cry and murmured “why you’re one of my babies.
You’re one of my own children!”, the Misfit told her that “She would of been a good woman of it
had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life.” and finally shoot her, the theme
of story begins to emerge from the water. The grandmother labeled “good man” does not truly
meaning “moral” or “kind”, the person who is “good man” in her opinion was only if his values
are equaled to her. For example, Misfit is a “good man” not because he is a reasonable person
but because he would not shoot a lady. In “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” its author, Flannery
O’Connor utilizes irony as a literary element to emphasizes that people are indifferent in this
selfish and hypocritical world, they need to identify the reality.
From the story, the author uses a interesting situational irony as introduction to point out
the family indifferent. For example, “The grandmother didn’t want to go to Florida. She wanted
to visit some of her connections in east Tennessee” (O’Connor 337). This shows that the
grandmother was a selfish person. She only wanted to east Tennessee so that she used a reason
“The Misfit [a crazy killer] is aloose from the Federal Pen and headed toward Florida” (O’Connor
337) to satisfy her individual wants. However, her son and son’s wife treat her indifferent
throughout the narration “Bailey didn’t look up from his reading so she wheeled around then and
faced the children’s mother, a young woman in slacks, whose face was as broad and innocent as a
cabbage…” (O’Connor 337). Bailey and his wife were not really respect their mother not even
want to talk to her. Also, her grandchild said she never stay at home even thought somebody
gives her million dollars (O’Connor 338). So we can know that the relationship among this family
are extremely selfish and indifferent. All people are not only care themselves but also represent
coldness to each other.
Secondly, the story also describes several society indifferent among plots. When the family
was on the way to Florida, they saw a black little boy on the walk who didn’t wear any britches,
the grandmother said “little niggers in the country don’t have things like we do”(O’Connor 339).
Her reaction toward the little boy shows despite and discrimination. She does not even thinking
about others feeling and never realizes the reality of the pain of black people about how poor
they are. Later, when they stopped at the Timothy, they met the guy Red Sammy and his wife
who was running a restaurant. The grandmother talked with Red Sammy and they shared the
common of “People are certainly not nice like they used to be”(O’ Conner 341). Suffered a trick
by two fellers, Red Sammy was disappoint by the society. He and his wife strongly believe that the
day that you can go anywhere and leave the door unlocked was no longer exist. The society
becomes more and more indifferent than before and lacking the communication and trust
between people.
Human nature indifferent have been reflected from each protagonist of the story. For
example, when the grandmother met the Misfit, she acted selfish “You wouldn’t shoot a lady,
would you?” (O’Connor 345). In dangerous, she only cared herself and tried to avoid being hurt
by the Misfit. She did not care others’ safety even her grandchild. Which shows that how selfish
the grandmother was. Also, the character Misfit, even though his said that he was treated
unjustly (O’Connor 348) he did not release anyone. His brutal and bloody may also be derived
from human indifference. He said that he was not a bad guy before, “but somewhere along the
line I done something wrong and got sent to the penitentiary. I was buried alive,”(O’Connor 347).
He told his evil comes from the indifferent and unfireness of the society and human nature. If he
was born in a family full of love and happiness, everything might be different.
People never recognize the reality that their sin and indifferent caused the tragedy. The
author, Flannery O’Conner, uses the irony in three different aspects to emphasize how the
indifferent and selfish penetrate into each character from small to large. Small indifferent may
not cause tragedy but large different will become a serious problem. If everyone show
indifference and selfishness, then the society becomes hypocritical and selfish. However, at the
end of the story, the grandmother touched the Misfit’s shoulder, the Misfit was shocked, then his
put down his gun and tried to clean tear (O’Connor 349) and the grandmother “..who half sat and
half lay in a puddle of blood with her legs crossed under her like a child’s and her face smiling up
at the cloudless sky.”(O’Connor 349) She was the only one that found her sin and tried to get
salvation. Her smile is the best line of the story, wish the love pacify the world.
