Assignment
The assignment is to write a scope statement and a brief execution strategy for a
project. Using these as input, build an appropriate WBS for the project. The deliverables
include a graphic of the WBS using a hierarchical structure and a written discussion of
how the WBS reflects the Project Execution Strategy.
The project is to design, build, and deliver a graduate course: Introduction to Project
Management.

The scope statement and execution plan (together) should not be more than 1
page long
The WBS should be subdivided to 3 levels (level 0 is single box, level 1, level 2,
level 3)
The WBS should be deliverable based and should use an appropriate numbering
system
WBS graphic must be prepared using some software such as Excel, Word, Visio,
etc. and saved into Acrobat (no hand drawings)
Discussion on how WBS reflects execution plan should not be more than halfpage, but should specifically point out how the WBS reflects the strategy
Include your name on the document (not just in file name) because it makes
grading easier if we see the name.
This is an individual assignment and not a group assignment
Learning Objective
My observation is that despite covering the topic many times in the program, students
struggle with the concept of WBS and how the WBS needs to reflect the execution
strategy. Building a proper WBS that reflects the execution plan is a critical first step in
building a project schedule.
The learning objective is to reinforce this practice. The idea is for you to take the concept
of WBS and apply it to a project and to specifically address how you incorporate the
execution strategy into the design of the WBS.
I am deliberately only giving you the general scope of the project. Your first task is to
write a scope statement and then to consider what would be the key decisions of an
execution plan for the project. Finally, how would your execution plan be reflected in the
design of the WBS?
