1. The local county is considering a budget proposal that would reallocate funding
to renovate the city pools. A survey is conducted to measure public opinion of the
proposal. A total of 200 individuals responded to the survey. Fifty of the
respondents were from the city and 150 were from the surrounding suburbs.

Is there a relationship between the opinion and the location of the resident at a
level of significance of 0.05?
2. A researcher wishes to conduct a study on the self-esteem levels of adolescents.
She believes that male adolescents have higher self-esteem than female
adolescents. Self-esteem test were administered to 55 randomly selected male
and 55 female adolescents. (The maximum score possible was a 10.)

Do the results indicate that self-esteem is significantly higher on average for
males at significance level of 0.01?
3. A social researcher believes the color red causes men’s attraction to women to
increase as well as women’s attraction to men. The color does not appear to
have an effect on same sex attractions. A study was conducted in which
photographs of male and female subjects in red and white were shown to
participants. They were asked to rate attractiveness of each photograph.

Use the above information from the study to evaluate the main effects and the
interaction at a level of significance of 0.05. Describe the effects of color on the
judgments of males and females. (Adapted from Statistics for the Behavioral
Sciences by Frederick J Gravetter and Larry B. Wallnau (9th edition), 2013,
Wadsworth Cengage Learning)
Hints for project 3:
Question 1:
Can type the numbers of the data into Statdisk spreadsheet (don’t
include labels) and
under Analysis> choose Contingency table and check on the columns
where the data are typed you will see the answers.
It’s similar to the way you do DQ8.2 question (as follows) only this time
the Table has more than one columns.
Question 2:
Do the results indicate that self-esteem is significantly higher on average
for males at significance level of 0.01?
Solution:
H0: mu1=mu2
Ha: mu1>mu2
Please be reminded that it’s a ONE tailed two independent samples t test.
In Statdisk> Analysis> Hypothesis Testing > mean two independent
samples
Question 3:
You may refer to the following snapshot for using a two way
ANOVA to determine whether attractions will be affected by
1. gender
2. hair color
3. interactions of gender and colors
Using Statdisk> analysis> tw0 way ANOVA> then 2 rows, 2
columns and 10 replications and then plug in the numbers
accordingly from the table.
Or you may use Real Statistics by clicking on the help regarding
the way data is supposed to be typed in Excel spreadsheet.
Project 3 question 2 or 3 regarding how to draw conclusion about
H0 or Ha (just use mu as an example, you need to compare the
specifi test statistics with its critical values or using p-value
approach for it)
Critical value approach:
mu0 is the claimed value (claimed mean in this example)
if Ha: mu> mu0 -> right tailed test.
t_crit_alpha will be positive and compare your test statistics with
it (rejection region RR is right tail)
if Ha: mu left tailed test.
t_crit_alpha will be negative and compare your test statistics with
it (RR is left tail)
if Ha: mu not =mu0-> two tailed test.
t_crit_alpha/2 can be both positive and negative and the rejection
regions are the two tails so compare your test statistics with
either one.
If the test statistics falls within any of the RR the H0 will be
rejected.
p-value approach:
ALWASY reject H0 if p-value
