Manufacturing plant: production line part checkers
As a part of the research team, I would look for the following three factors: (1) Accountability, (2)
evidence of groupthink, and (3) commitment. Certainly, there are other factors, such as how the
team handles conflict, or what skills exist within the group; however, these are secondary. If the
team does not hold each other accountable, it would not be necessary to research how it handles
conflict. Additionally, if the team lacks commitment then it would be worthless to study its skills.
The first factor that my research team will review is whether there is an accountability to the work
team and to the greater organization (Losh, 2011, Ch.1). When it comes to manufacturing, and in
particular production and assembly, the person who first handles the parts determines the results for
those who follow. If the team does not hold each person accountable for his or her actions, then that
person may allow bad parts to pass through to the assembly team. The parts checker must remove
the bad pieces prior to them getting to assembly. When it comes to safety products like airbags, this
need of accountability rises significantly. Accountability will lead to enhanced productivity by
eliminating waste and downtime.
The second factor is to determine if the group is operating with diversity and using critical thinking
skills, or conversely, has it developed groupthink (What is, n.d., p.1)? The parts checkers must
ensure that the line keeps moving and that they check the parts properly for quality. A person might
choose to stand as a zombie and mindlessly look at parts all day, or that person might look for ways
to speed up production, help others along the line, or teach new employees the tricks to spotting a
bad piece. If a team falls under groupthink, it would be easy to withhold information and to think of
the other departments as enemies. Groupthink will hinder production by stopping the flow of
information and causing an “us versus them” mentality.
The final factor that I would research is the level of commitment that the group has towards each
other and in meeting the objectives of the organization. If a team is not committed, it will avoid doing
the little extra things that help the entire organization. Teams who are not committed have an “it’s not
my job” attitude. This leads to costly breakdowns, ruined machinery, and sometimes injury. A team
should focus on doing what it takes to meet the organizational objectives. When an employee
focuses on what needs accomplished, it will lead to enhanced productivity by making sure that
everything is operating correctly.
