ORIGINAL QUESTION
Bacteria Classification
Discussion Questions
1. Carl Linnaeus developed the binomial system of classification which is still used today.
This global system assigns a genus and species to all living organisms (e.g., Homo
sapiens). Many scientists believe that an understanding of organism classification is vital
to an understanding of the diversity of living organisms.

Do you agree? Why or why not?
2. Do you come across similar types of classification and organization in your own life or
career (e.g., the Dewey Decimal System)?

Explain your answer.
3. Do you think there are bacteria in the world that have not been identified yet? Why or
why not?

If so, where might the bacteria be located?

How might they be different, beneficial or harmful compared to known
bacterial species?
4. Your turn! Imagine that you have discovered a new bacterium! You know that it is in the
genus Escherichia based on staining and biochemical tests, but it is a brand new species.

Briefly describe the bacterium’s environment and/or where you found it
(e.g., Yankee stadium).

Do not forget to give the bacterium a name! Scientific names are usually
descriptive; they tell us something about the organism’s characteristics or
the scientist who discovered them. As the founder, you may name the
species whatever you wish (e.g., Escherichia derek jeteria ). *** Be sure to
review the classification and naming of organisms in our digital
book before choosing the second part of the name (species) for your
bacterium. Remember that the first part of the name, or genus, for your
bacterium is Escherichia.
STUDENT NUMBER 1 REPLY TO ORIGINAL QUESTION:
Hello Everyone,
1. Yes, I do agree, mainly because there are so many different types of living organisms that if
they were all the same classification you would never be able to find what you were looking for,
because there are to many different types.
2. In my career I do come across different types of classifications, I work in a prison so we use
classifications to identify which inmates are dangerous and which ones are not. That way we
know how to treat each inmate. The same can go for classifications in bacteria, they can be
classified in dangerous and non dangerous, which can tell you how to handle the bacteria.
3. Yes I do believe there are different types of bacteria in the world that have yet to be
discovered. New bacteria can be discovered anywhere. There are so many types and so many
still being discovered. They can be both beneficial and harmful it all depends on where you find
them and what they are doing to the organism you find them on.
4. My bacterium’s environment would be in the northwest rainforest of Washington state. It
would need a moist environment to survive which is why it would survive so well in the pacific
northwest. I found it on the Quinault reservation while going for a walk through the forest. I
would call it Escherichia Quinaltales.
STUDENT 2 RESPONSE TO ORIGINAL QUESTION:
Hello Professor and class.
I am in agreement with the scientists regarding the classification being necessary in
understanding the diversity of organisms. It is because of the discoveries of bacterial differences
that many diseases have been cured. The more science knows about the organisms and their
differences, the more they know about life on earth, and how to keep it in good balance.
In my own life there is much organization necessary. I have to keep client records and
understand the differences between products used on them. A perm is not just a perm, and a
color is not just a color. Different ones have different properties, and one does not fit all.
It seems science is discovering new things all of the time. I am guessing there are bacteria that
have not been identified as of yet, because humans have not been everywhere on this earth yet.
In the depths of the oceans, far beyond what has been seen, is a place I would think to look for
new bacterial species. This bacterial species would survive in the dark, salty water, and would
perhaps be cleaning up the wastes that end up there. It would be of benefit to the ocean and its
inhabitants because of its particular function of cleaning.
The new bacteria I have discovered was in the southern Nevada desert. Testing indicates the
bacteria is of the Escherichia genus. It was discovered in a relatively stagnant warm water spring
near lake mead. Since the species has not yet been named, it shall be named for the spring in
which it was found, which was Roger spring. Therefore, it is henceforth known as Escherichia
rogeria.
Thank you,
