My field of study is construction management, and after several hours of researching possible topics to explore, I finally narrowed it down to one that I can directly relate to. I chose to research women working in the construction industry, and how there are still inequalities in opportunities in the field. This topic is important to me, because I’ve already experienced the challenges of being female in the construction environment. Several sources will state how far equality in the industry has come for women, whereas others will showcase the types of challenges women face in today’s world and how far we still have to come. When discussing the first side of the argument, we review the statement, “Is the construction industry an equal opportunity workplace for women?” Based on my own experiences working in construction the last five years, I have been presented with many challenges working in a male dominated field. According to the Occupational Safety and Health website, compared to other industries the percentage of construction workers that were female in a 2010 study was only at 9%, the lowest of all other industries. This includes managerial positions, as well as administrative and field positions. These statistics are very telling and has Image transcription text% of workers Services 59% Finance 54% Wholesale & Retail 46% Public admin 45% Manufacturing 28%Agriculture 24% Transportation &.. 23% Mining 13% Construction 9% All industries 47%… Show moreto make you wonder why more women aren’t interested in this field. Besides the factor of trying to have an equal playing field in the construction industry there are other key factors that deter women away. According to a survey of tradeswomen conducted by CWIT and two research studies by NIOSH, the key findings and recommendations are organized into seven categories: Workplace Culture; Sanitary Facilities; Personal Protective Equipment; Ergonomics; Reproductive Hazards; Health and Safety Training; and Injury and Illness Data and Research. Unfortunately, the survey exposed exactly why more women are not interested in working in construction. NIOSH found that, in a one-year period, 41% of female construction workers suffered from gender harassment. In the CWIT study, 88% of the respondents reported sexual harassment. Other key factors include not having personal protective equipment that can fit a woman properly, ergonomic challenges with heavy lifting and manual handling, and job sites providing sanitary facilities. 80% of tradeswomen have encountered worksite with dirty toilets or none at all. When evaluating PPE standards, many women reported that clothing garments were not sized or fitted to a female form. The lack of appropriate PPC and PPE can cause serious safety and health risks for women, and men of smaller sizes, who rely on protective clothing and equipment to help them keep safe. Having inadequate or ill-fitting clothing, boots, gloves, or safety equipment presents a safety hazard for any worker. (Osha) Several recommendations were made to OSHA in hopes to combat some of these things, but we still have not seen a rise in female construction workers. These issues merit attention to, and action by, all those who share responsibility in the arena of construction safety and health. ( https://www.osha.gov/advisorycommittee/accsh) On the opposite there are those sources who believe we have come very far in gender equality in this field. It wasn’t very easy to find many sources on this opposing position. The statistics pretty much speak for themselves, however in comparison to the past decade, women are starting to branch into the construction world, as people start becoming more open to different genders, races, and religions in the environment. According to an article from goconstruct.org, the number of women joining the construction is on the rise with more and more in the engineering and managerial realm. An organization called Women into Construction became a nonprofit organization to provide training, work placement, and guidance to women interested in the field. This is one of many organizations that are geared towards women’s rights, and equality, and as a product of the support, we are seeing an uptick in females in construction globally. Women in constriction-USA offers conferences, virtual events, and resources to women. These types of organizations and programs are giving women hope that they can enter into this field and be treated as an equal to their male counterparts. Thinking about my own experiences in the construction environment, I have been faced with several challenges described above. I am usually the only female on a job site, and employees that are new and unfamiliar with the way I run projects, sometimes will try and take advantage of the fact that I am a woman. Early on in my career I realized that I have to be very tactical and firm to establish my position. Unfortunately, my male colleagues in the same roles did not have to “earn” that respect, it was just given. I do believe that people like me are paving the way for growth of diversity in the industry. I found something I was passionate about and wasn’t going to be intimidated. Fast forward to 2022, I have started seeing more female workers in the field, which is very refreshing. Women are very detailed orientated and is a great benefit to the construction industry. How do we move forward in bringing more women into the industry and keep it growing? Just like most things, we need to start early on with children. As a society let’s normalize trade school, and women working “male” jobs. From a young age society programs our mentality to think there are “male jobs”, such as construction, mechanics, oilfield, etc. We are taught that women’s jobs are administrative, caretaking, office type of work. What if a young lady who was interested in buildings, and working with her hands pursued her passion instead of what society tells us to do? I think as a society in the United States we are growing and expanding our acceptance of gender roles and equality, and I hope that we continue to see growth and representation in the construction industry.Arts & Humanities English ENGL 1001
