IRPS220A: FALL 2017
HUMAN RIGHTS & THE UN PROJECT GUIDELINES
IGeneral Background ~
The goal of this project is for you to examine the ways in which human rights norms and practices have an
impact on two specific global issues: armed conflict and climate change. You will explore the extent to which
human rights in these two contexts are sufficient, or not, for addressing current and future situations. Can
human rights standards be used to resolve problems relevant to armed conflict and climate change? (Learning
Outcomes 1, 2, 4, 6)
IIAssignments, Activities, & Grading ~
You will undertake various written and interactive assignments for this project. First, you will conduct
research and write a paper that examines the relationship between human rights, armed conflict
and climate change ( this part is what are you going to write about ). Second, in a model UN Security
Council simulation, you will represent a particular member state of that body (see list below) to debate human
rights vis-à-vis the two issues. Finally, you will write a brief (2 page)reflection essay on your perceptions of the
issues, to what extent human rights norms and practices are relevant, and your participation in the UN Security
Council simulation. All due dates are indicate in the syllabus and our Canvas course.
A. Policy Paper ~ Human Rights, Armed Conflict & Climate Change
1. Content:
The Human Rights policy paper revolves around investigating a set of overarching questions. In addition
to the questions below, your analysis should include consideration of core human rights concepts such as
war crimes, crimes against humanity, right to safe food, water, air, etc. Finally, your paper needs to be
written from the perspective of the country that you are representing for the UN Security
Council simulation (I represent Uruguay). Your research should include primary and secondary
sources as well as scholarly/peer reviewed sources. However, do not include a profile of your country in
the paper.
a. In what ways, do the six types of human rights apply to situations of armed conflict, in particular the
circumstances in Central Africa?
b. In what ways, do the six categories of human rights apply to climate change, in particular its impact
on security?
c. From the perspective of the country that you are representing, how does/should the
international/global community, through the UN and other international organizations, use human
rights norms and practices to guide policy making in specific situations or with respect to specific
global issues?
2.Technical Requirements:
The technical requirements below need to be met for your paper.
a. Length: 6 pages (1,950 words)
b. A complete bibliography, not ‘Works Cited’ or list of URLs
c. All technical aspects of the paper (margins, spacing, citations, page numbers, etc.) should conform
to one of two style guides. If you are a CRJ major, then the APA style guide should be applied.
