What you pawn, I will redeem
I have chosen writing prompt # 3 for my literary analysis assignment. I have picked
the literary work “What You Pawn, I will redeem,” written by Sherman Alexis.
My working thesis
My working thesis in the story is that of the main character Jackson, who is a middleaged American Indian depicted to be an absolute careless man in the past before events
unfolded that changed his life to a man able to be relied upon. Jackson, a homeless but very
proud man, could not keep any coin in his pocket before finding the unplanned use of it
putting his possessed mission of buying back his grandmother’s stolen regalia mission in
jeopardy. An alcoholic Jackson has always willed the heart with excuses used by many lazy
people to blame his shortcomings and problems on his culture of being an Indian in a whitedominated culture, even though he has the potential and the temperament to achieve much and
fulfill his promises and responsibilities as well as righting the mistakes he has done in his
entire life.
Developed working thesis.
Jackson has shown that alcoholism is a vice when it comes to fulfilling one’s needs
especially when one is earning less and spending more. Jackson though is a very generous
man and he is an individual willing to spend what he has with others even at the part where he
buys his hungry Indian alert friends food is a noble and humble course that depicts he isn’t a
person whose mind is selfish wired as it has been stipulated before by his actions and doings.
Jackson changes for the better after the mission. It is evident that in the face of despair, only

hope remains as Jackson has sworn to earn back his grandmother’s regalia, even without
showing the slightest indication that he would be ready to accept the offer from the cop of
retrieving the dress legally. He feels that he is indebted to earn this regalia that he feels he is
connected to through the yellow bead in it and he is ready to work to earn it back.
Analyzing the key ideas
Focusing on the three key ideas of Jackson being stuck in the old culture and his
inability to secure his grandmother’s dress in time, his homeless and messed up life, and his
turning point where he shoves off his old culture and embraces the new one, how I can
describe the man himself can only be described through his big heart. He is a man though
having encountered ups and downs and a few heartbreaks, has always had a kind heart and an
honest one to a world that he had previously described as so cruel to the minority few against
a dominant white population who shown little concern for these Indians.( Fletcher, 2006).
Jackson shows a slight ambivalence to the altitudes of his fellow Indians, though he
feels they have been alienated or marginalized by the dominant white population. The way he
speaks about them depicts no admiration for their attitudes and actions.in the prompt they are
described as people who love alcohol a lot and many free things such as the part where they
jump to his generosity on buying shots for them in their cheap bar but no other population is
talked about to love such an alcoholic lifestyle. The way even his friends conducts themselves
by drinking to the extent of blanking out on the streets illustrate an ambivalent character of
the population is somehow greedy, opportunist and people who do not love to roll up their
sleeves and work hard to earn a sweaty living. From Jackson’s actions of borrowing and
gabbling also indicate their love and altitudes for seeking an easy way out of problems and

easy money that is not hard earned without thinking about other means that can generate
money if they don’t find anyone to come to their aid.
“Don’t ask me rhetorical questions. They scare me.” She looked puzzled, and then she
laughed. Based on the direct quotation from the story it shows how Jackson can speak
sarcastically but in a humorous manner. This line is at the moments where he talks with a
waiter in a hotel that shows his exceptional ability to speak in a way that he can mix sarcasm
with humor in an extraordinary manner that leaves people in stitches of laughter and
admirable of this quality from him of being funny.
From the text used before of symbolizing our main character to people in society who
can embrace change for the betterment of their lives shows that no one is limited to the
problems of the present but with a shift in altitudes, every man can change their destinies for a
promising future.
