As we get close to the end of our course, and the end of our learning through
service experience, it is important to reflect – not just reflect on the course, but take it
to the next level and look at what aspects within each of us we have grown deeper,
what our experience has taught us for service organizations, and how we as individuals
can make an impact on community and society.
The phrase “start anywhere, and follow it everywhere” is significant in reflecting on
what we have learned. Perhaps you enjoyed the idea suggested back in chapter one of
working toward finding a solution to lessen the number of homeless individuals in a
specific community.
If you recall, this large idea began with INTENT. When we “start anywhere”, it simply
means to look within yourself and determine what gives you passion. We cannot solve
the “world problems”, but we can start with a talent, an idea, a point of view that gives
us as individuals a passion – and then when we apply the intent to find a solution – we
have literally started from anywhere. From there, we can act out our passion, so we
can follow it everywhere!
Think back to the variety of concepts addressed throughout the past 8 weeks. As we
have learned how to apply the concepts into our real-life service organizations, our own
communities, one concept has needed to remain constant – accountability.

Most importantly in the service organization – we see that if we are not accountable or
responsible in following through with reaching the steps toward a goal, then the

In our educational journey, there is, perhaps, nothing more important than reflecting
on where we have been, what we have accomplished so far, and where we are going.
To inspire this reflection, let’s go back through some of the key concepts we have
explored throughout this course. As you revisit these points, consider whether or not
you feel that you have come to a fuller understanding of these learning goals. If you
have, congratulations on your accomplishments; if you’ve not yet reached the level you
wanted, think about ways you can work to improve your knowledge and/of skills as you
move forward in your degree.
In the course syllabus, we stated that, at the successful completion of this course, you
will be able to:








read and extract information and ideas from a variety of texts;

ask valid and logical questions that promote a deeper understanding of the issues being
examined;
identify the internal and external factors that affect the process of decision-making;

Week One
In week one, we explored the idea behind “service” in a broad sense, specifically, that it
is to contribute to our communities and society. We also looked at our personal
strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats that can help or harm us as we move
toward bettering ourselves and our communities.
Week Two
In week two, we examined the relationships (i.e. community) developed between the
individual and community partners, specifically asking the question, “what more can
these relationships do to reach a common goal?” We also asked the question, “Who are
you, and what skills can you bring to the table?” Evaluating these traits aide in being
able to build leadership and relationships to a higher level to reach the desired
outcomes.
Week Three
In week three we looked at the way groups can be enjoyable or not so enjoyable when
working toward the completion of a goal. We looked at the different roles individuals
play within a group and how those roles can balance out the overall project.
Additionally, we addressed the very real fact that each of us have differences. Often
these different perspectives (due to culture, upbringing, ethnicity, etc.) allow us to
maximize the problem-solving capacities as we help one another see obstacles from
different points of view. Sometimes they seem to get in the way. The trick to working in
groups is to understand and allow for these differences.
Week Four
In week four, we discussed how deeper modes of reflection can be helpful in evaluating
the insights, and deeper purpose for the service-learning environment, and how these
reflections can help us in our own personal, academic, and professional growth.
Week Five
In week five, we looked at the ways forming mentoring relationships can help certain
relationships to move forward through empowerment and increasing credibility. We also
looked at how, though there may be different types of leaders, each type can be
significant to our service organization environment. These lessons can also be applied
to leadership in other environments.
Week Six
In week six, we discussed the notion that roadblocks are inevitable, but that it is up to
us within our service-learning environment to use the tools we have learned to create
alternate solutions to continue striving to meet our goal. As college students and
graduates, we each have academic knowledge, but it is even more important to learn
how applying that academic knowledge with knowledge we can gain from our
communities and putting the pieces altogether can help us become more effective in
reaching our goals.
Week Seven
In week seven, we discussed how the evaluation of ourselves, the service-learning
course, and the overall service-learning environment allows us to reflect on what is/has
worked, and what can be done/changed to meet the goal for our community
organization.
Week Eight
Finally, this week we are discussing the way an idea or project can “start anywhere,”
but can lead us everywhere. Through reflection and taking note of what guides each of
us as individuals can lead us to making a difference within our own community, as well
as in our personal, academic, and professional pursuits.
We hope you have enjoyed your experiences in this course, and that they will lead you
