Website Evaluation
URL: http://www.worlds-worst-website.com/
Navigation
This website lacks consistent sequences of actions, starting with scrolling through the
main page. A properly designed page allows for intuitive navigation, whereas this site requires
the user to scroll up, down, left, and right, just to explore all of the items on the page. The user is
left guessing, as to which elements contain clickable links. Many of these links are
outdated/broken, leaving the user frustrated. When scrolling the right side of the page, the page
randomly scrolls back towards the left.
Layout
Consistency in layout is severely lacking. There is no discernable head or body to the
page. Items are scattered throughout the page, in no particular pattern. Overlapping elements add
to the chaos. A lot of the text is unreadable, due to being cut off by an adjacent element. Colors
are random, and flashing boxes distract the user. Some windows are upside down, while others
are floating around the page. The background detracts too much from the pageâs content. One
neutral, solid color would be appropriate here, rather than the randomly overlapping images that
are currently present. The fonts used here, are also chaotic. Text size, color, and style are entirely
inconsistent from one element to the next. The user is overwhelmed by this, as it takes a few
seconds to re-focus when looking at different items. Window sizes are also inconsistent.
Usability
This site is universally difficult to navigate and use, regardless of age or ability. A novice
user, especially, will experience increased difficulty in recognizing embedded links and simply
navigating the page. Horizontal scrolling is hardly ever appropriate in web page design.
Dialogs to Yield Closure
There is no clear beginning or ending to this site. Random and various links are
embedded into the elements, which take the user away from the site. Novice users have no
simple way to return. Links that open in new tabs allow for easier return to the starting point.
Prevent Errors
Many of the links on this site are broken. Clicking on them (after hunting them down),
directs the user to an outdated or entirely non-existent page. The designer should check
embedded links on a regular basis to ensure user satisfaction.
Internal Locus of Control
Upon first entering this site, the user is overwhelmed. The difficulty in discerning
elements takes away any feeling of being in control while navigating. Familiarity is absent, due
to all of the inconsistencies on the page. Users are comfortable and feel in control, with
organized and consistent elements, links, etc.
Short-term Memory Load
By the time a user gets to the bottom (or right side) of this website, they forget how it
started in the first place. The sense of chaos that immediately greets users, takes away their
ability to gain any familiarity as they work their way through each element.
Cognitive Walkthrough (First time user
Upon entering the website, I am unsure of the intended purpose. There is no heading or
description present anywhere on the page. My instinct is to look at the top center/left of the page
for a title and/or description. The elements are unorganized. Similar items are not grouped
together, and the overlapped elements create frustration and confusion. Spacing in entirely
inconsistent. Typography is also inconsistent, as it differs from one element to the next. Some
text is bold, some is too big, and some is too small. Hovering over pictures with the mouse
pointer, shows that embedded links are present in some, but not all of the elements. The first item
clicked on brings me to a âSorry, we could not findâŚâ page, which leaves me inclined to not
return to the site. The colors are a mixture of light and dark, and one box flashes multiple colors.
This draws attention to that element, but no user interaction is available within it. A sense of
simplicity is also lacking, as simple actions like reading text and navigating the page is a
complex process.
In conclusion, this website violates nearly every rule of âThe Eight Golden Rulesâ. As a
first time user, I am left feeling frustrated and overwhelmed. I am certainly not inclined to revisit the page in the future.
