Advertising and Social Constructs
100 points
Purpose: For this assignment, you will be analyzing an advertisement and articulating the social constructs
being created, maintained, and/or challenged by the ad.
The purpose of this assignment is to give you practice analyzing the relationship between images and
messages, analyzing media through a sociological lens, evaluating intended audience, creating vivid
description that brings an image alive for the reader, and effectively supporting a clear analytical thesis.
Task: Go to http://adage.com/lp/top15/#intro. Watch the ads and choose one that you can connect to the issue
of social constructs. (They all relate; just choose the one you feel offers you the most to work with.)
Write an essay that carefully describes the ad and analyzes its connection to specific social constructs. Your
thesis will make a claim about the sociological impact of the advertisement.
This essay is going to require a great deal of specific, descriptive writing. In order for your connections to be
persuasive, your reader will need a concrete sense of what is happening in the ad. Clear description tends to
require a lot of words.
You must also integrate researched, academically credible outside source material into this paper to bolster—
not overwhelm—your points.
Heads Up:
The first “Old Spice” video discusses the success of the ad rather than showing the ad; don’t use this one—
the ads themselves are very short and may be difficult to work with
“The Hire” will be very difficult to work with—short films rather than conventional ad
You may not do the “Dove: Campaign for Real Beauty” because the analysis is already done.
Required elements:
• Direct discussion of specific social constructs. What do we all believe and how does this ad ‘feed into’
those constructs, or deviate from them?
• Summary of the ad—what are the highlights, important elements, primary figures, etc? What is the
“story” of the ad?
• Careful description of relevant components of the ad.
• Discussion of the specific intended audience for this ad. How do you know? What is the advertiser
doing to specifically reach that audience?
Some questions to get you started (Not an outline for your paper!)
Of course, this is only a partial list of questions you might need to address in your paper, and some of these
questions may not be relevant to the ad you choose.
Description:
• If there are figures (men, women, children, animals, cartoons) in the advertisement, what are they like?
What can be said about their facial expressions, poses, hairstyles, hair color, age, sex, ethnicity,
education, occupation, relationships (of one to the other), and so on?
• What is the general ambiance of the advertisement? What mood does it create? How does it do this?
• What is the spatiality in the advertisement? Is there a lot of open space, or is it busy with visual stimulus
and activity? What colors are predominant? What is the effect?
Social Constructs:
• Does the ad make any distinction between “good” and “bad”? How does it communicate this? What is
the effect?
• How do the characters act? Are they within the expectations of social norms? If not, in what ways do
they deviate? What is the effect?
• What is the intended response from the audience?
• Does this advertisement make any claim, overt or hidden, about gender, race, age, power, ability,
stereotypes, conformity, peer pressure, etc.
• How prominent is the product in the ad? What is the effect?
• What are the social implications associated with the topic/product of this ad?
• Who might be offended by this ad? Why? Was this intentional?
Details:
English 101: Minimum 1000 words
