Acts of charity and the ideals of social justice are at the core of the Catholic faith. They are embodied
expressions of the beliefs that are held by the Church and her members.
In order to experience the connection between the Catholic intellectual tradition and the lived practice of
doing works of charity, each student is required to complete one service activity in conjunction with
Campus Ministry. They offer a wide variety of opportunities to match your interests and your schedule.
Although you are encouraged to do the service activity with other classmates, you must write your own
reflection individually, without consultation from another classmate. When you attend your service
experience, you must have the Campus Ministry staff verify your participation. After completing the
service requirement, each student is required to write a reflection essay (1 ½ – 2 pages double spaced) that
includes the following components:
1. One paragraph summarizing your service experience
2. One paragraph summarizing one main point from Part I of Benedict XVI’s encyclical, Deus
caritas est
3. One paragraph summarizing one main point from Part II of Benedict XVI’s encyclical, Deus
caritas est
4. One paragraph reflecting on the way in which the service experience you participated in did or
did not reflect the Christian understanding of love of God and love of neighbor as presented in the
encyclical
Your reflection will be graded according to the following rubric. This essay must conform to the general
guidelines for writing assignments that are found in the syllabus. Failure to adhere to these guidelines will
result in a deduction of points from the overall essay grade.
