Introduction to Topic – Prompt
September 8
In this class we will be exploring the academic study of Catholic theology, an undertaking that
can be done by all, even those who are not of the Catholic faith. It is important to learn about
different religious traditions so that one can dialogue with others and articulate their own beliefs
and thoughts in the broader context of society. In this assignment, students will use a variety of
sources, including Church documents and theological writings, to articulate the Catholic
Church’s position on ecumenical and interreligious dialogue. Each student will also include a
brief reflection on his or her own ecumenical or interreligious experiences. Additionally, each
student will critique the Church’s argument, noting some of the strengths and weaknesses of the
argument.
Therefore, there are three components that must be
addressed in this essay (this list does not necessarily reflect
the order in which these items ought to be addressed in your
final essay):
1) Summarize and articulate the Church’s position (this should be the longest section)
2) A brief reflection on personal experience with ecumenical and/or interreligious
interactions
3) A critique/analysis of the Church’s position and argument, noting both its strengths and
weaknesses
The only sources that will be allowed in this essay and that
must be included in it are:
–
Second Vatican Council, Decree on Ecumenism, Unitatis Redintegratio
Second Vatican Council, Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian
Religions, Nostra aetate
John Paul II, Ut unum sint, nos. 41-76
