Abstract
In this research paper, I shall extensively discuss matters revolving around the brick and
mortar stores and the online retail business. Technology has brought tremendous changes in the
business world today. The pace at which the internet is spreading has resulted to people
purchasing products and services from the comfort of their homes. Initially, the business
involved setting up a stall or an office (brick and mortar stores), and all the business transactions
would take place there. E-commerce has become an irreplaceable medium of marketing as most
people are more familiar with the internet (Becker, 2017). Online consumers are on the lookout
for new products. Besides, they always look for compatible products that are pocket-friendly.
When one is seeking for all these qualities, the internet is the best way that offers these services
in a quicker and affordable idea since you can choose from the numerous products displayed by
the many retailers. However, the E-commerce also offers several disadvantages to both the
retailers and consumers.

Introduction
In many developing countries, employees in corporations are faced with the many
dynamics that revolve around their jobs. When interacting with their business, they tend to give
priority to the online shopping since it has many advantages as compared to the physical walk-in
shops. These include convenience; reliability; cost and time saving and above all, quick on
delivery. The research shows that over the years, most countries have developed regarding
internet usage. Though only limited number of users use the internet for shopping, it shows that
in the next few years, most people will have opted e-commerce since it is the most reliable
means compared to the traditional methods of shopping (Shankar, Venkatesh & Naik, 2010). As
companies resolve to sell their goods and services online, most retailers and advertisers will have
to use the internet as an essential medium for communication. This can be done to reach the
enormous number of users whom most likely are unaware of particular services and products.
The purpose of this study is to outline the benefits of online shopping application for a retail
company across the world.
Problem statement
In most developing and developed countries, different corporations have immensely
invested in the internet. The internet has become more reliable and at a very affordable price.
Moreover, the speed has greatly been enhanced. With this kind of convenience, people are
expected to venture into the online shopping but this has not been the case. Only a small number
of people seem interested compared to the larger number whose main agenda is having
conversations on social media or getting other forms of entertainment. There is therefore great
need to motivate people to get along with the online shopping (Jiang & Benbasat, 2015).

Rationale for the research
This is a descriptive research aimed at bringing out the benefits of having online
shopping transactions. Moreover, the problem revolving around online shopping is explained to
ensure that one has full knowledge. The problem of online shopping should be addressed since
most people are either ignorant or overambitious when it comes to matters concerning the
internet.
Advocating for online shopping is done since it is time convenient and also cost effective.
It is therefore worth educating to people on the benefits of crossing overboard from the brick and
mortar stores to the technological world. This will require a convincing mind to change the
attitude of such consumers. This paper is the perfect paper that has clearly stated all the
advantages and the challenges one goes through while carrying out online transactions (Shankar,

Perceived Risks – These are the negative consequences that may occur when a consumer
of a particular product contemplates on purchasing an item online.
Perceived advantages of buying products and services online
The main reason why many people have opted for the online shopping is due to its
convenience and the time-saving ability. However the attitude of the consumer is the key when
matters of online shopping are concerned. Furthermore, one can shop online 24/7 hence there are
no limits to the regular’ business hours’ cliché. The following are the advantages of online
shopping to the retail industry.
1. It attracts new customers – The physical retail is branded for having a standing physical
relationship between the retailers and the consumers. However, for the online retail, one
only needs to have a search engine to look for a particular product online. This means
that new customers get familiar with new products every day (Turban et al., 2017).
2. Checking the consumer’s buying habit – From the online shopping, one can track on the
fastest selling product in the market. The retailers will always work towards satisfying the
needs of the consumers hence creating a long-standing relationship between them
(Muganda, Otuya & Waiganjo, 2014).
3. Competence – When setting up a brick and mortar store, capital is required for the
construction. Furthermore, one needs permits and licenses when starting a physical
business. The advantage of online business is on cost reduction. All you need is fast
internet and a device that to help you market your products

4. Frequent customers market your product – A happy customer will always come back for
more. These customers further introduce their friends to your products, and this expands
one’s business. Allowing customers to drop their reviews and ratings will ensure
efficiency in the marketing of products.
5. The business is open 24/7 in 365 days – This is important to the customer since they can
purchase an item regardless of the time of the day; whether it’s early in the morning or
the midnight. For the retailer, they will increase in sale production (Shankar, Venkatesh
& Naik, 2010).
6. Most business costs are reduced – In a physical business, one needs employees who will
do the selling and advertisement of the products. In e-commerce, the internet does the
work for you. On the part of the customers, the cost of traveling is also reduced. Just with
few mouse clicks, the customers can get their enjoyable experience.
7. Getting more information on products – It might be a big hassle equipping all your
employees with all the necessary details to relay to the many customers who do the real
shopping. However, products will always have all the required information put on them
when one opts for the online shopping. One can, therefore, evaluate what they want in
connection with the cost (Schafer, 2014).
8. Boosting the brand awareness – It is essential for a retailer to advance the business in the
search engines to target more customers. This can be achieved by developing pages that
can be indexed by search engine crawlers.
9. Good discounts and great offers – To attract more customers, retailers will always opt
selling products at discounted prices. This will save the consumers more money
(Muganda, Otuya & Waiganjo, 2014).

Perceived risks/ disadvantages
1. There is a delay in delivery – Through relaying information, selecting and paying for a
product may take less than 10 minutes, the problem comes due to obstruction of delivery.
Shipment may take even three weeks. This might frustrate the customer who might opt to
buy the products from the physical shops.
2. There is lack of touch and feel on products – The consumer lacks satisfaction on the
quality of products before it’s delivered to them. Moreover, some products like clothes
cannot be bought online since one needs to fit them before purchasing (Muganda, Otuya
& Waiganjo, 2014).
3. Lack of shopping experience – There is always that chance of people going out and
shopping which is a beautiful experience to have. One gets a chance to admire everything
displayed for sale or even smelling the smell of a store full of new clothes. An online
shopper is only glued to the product on display.
4. Frauds – With the rise of cyber-crimes, consumers are not secure when doing an online
transaction. Some people are not reliable on the market and might ask for extra
information which might be used to access one’s credit cards and bank accounts.
Shoppers should, therefore, be careful (Schafer, 2014).
Recommendations
Customers should avoid purchasing products on a newly created website. One should
always check the customers’ reviews before buying them. Always place your orders early. This
will always ensure that you have the right destinations for the product. It will also ensure that the

product does not run out of stock. For the shipping, make sure that the conditions or any delays
are well discussed.
Conclusion
Over the years, technology has provided a better platform for online shopping. With the
growing technology, more ideas will continue emerging. Speculations are that online shopping
will soon overtake the in-store shopping. Online shopping has relayed lots of information to the
consumers who shop with ease. Some customers still prefer the brick and mortar stores where
they can feel and touch the products. Online shopping has opened many ways for the small
retailers who find it difficult raising the costs. It is always a win-win game for both the
consumers and the retailers.
