Find a current, original popular print or e-source reporting on any aspect of biological
anthropology. Current refers to a period not older than 6 months ago. Original refers to a
magazine, newspaper, or e-newsfeed where you found the news. Popular means it should not
be an article published in a professional journal and neither a book chapter.
Common subsections in Biological Anthropology appropriate for a News Item:
Primatology, Forensic Anthropology, Medical Anthropology, Osteology, Primate Taxonomy,
Human Biological Variation, Dental Anthropology, and Nutritional Anthropology. If you are in

anthropology will result in zero points.
1. Summary
The first part of the assignment asks you to summarize the news item without interpreting
or further commenting on the text. State facts and what the journalist/author had to say! You
can write your summary directly on page 2 where it says “Summary” or you create your own file
that identifies the summary. Your summary should be 300-400 words long. It cannot be less or
you lose 5 points but it can be longer. Summary longer than 1000 words results in losing 5
points.
2. Relevance
The second part of the assignment asks you to critically evaluate and contextualize the News
Item. Explain what the importance of this news is for the general public. Adopt a professional,
scientific perspective to answer this question. Jargon, inappropriate word choices or
unprofessional comments will result in loss of 5 points. You may write your answer directly on
this form (see page 3). You can use about 800-1000 words for your answer. Writing less than
800 words will result in losing 5 points but you may write up to 2000 words without penalty.
However, if your answer exceeds 2000 words you will also lose 5 points.
You MUST provide a word count for summary and relevance each at the beginning. If you
forget the word count you will lose 10 points.
Handwritten News Items are not accepted.

section: e.g. . Only provide one file that
includes your written part + original source or upload a maximum of two files, i.e. one word file
of your written answer and one .pdf or .jpg file of your source.
