SOWK 260 – Social Welfare, Social Policy, and Social Work I
Assignment #2 – Social Policy Assessment
The purpose of this assignment is for students to understand the impact of historical events on
social policy. They will learn about the background, content, and impact of laws on social work
practice. Students will select one social policy from the list provided. They will research its
history, explain its purpose, and discuss the implications of the policy for social work practice.
The paper should include the following sections:
1. Introduction to the topic and paper: Provide a general overview of the topic addressed
by the social policy – describe the issue and describe its importance. Then provide a brief
overview of what you plan to do in the paper.
2. History of the law: Using material from class and other scholarly sources (books and
scholarly articles), describe the history of the law. What was the impetus to bring this law
forward? In other words, what was happening at that time, or up to the time the law was
passed? If it was an event (i.e. the Great Depression), describe the historical period and
what moved legislators to create this law. If it was a broad issue (i.e. child abuse, spousal
abuse, work conditions, etc.), describe the issue and what happened that moved
legislators to create this law. Highlight the social values and ideological beliefs
embedded in the policy. Be sure to highlight what historical period from those covered in
this class this law relates to.
3. Policy explanation: Name the law and summarize the main goals of the law – what is it
intended to do? You will need to do research to understand the areas the law covers. Be
sure to include information about implementation, funding, eligibility criteria, and other
important stipulations.
4. Assessment and implications for social work practice: Thoughtfully and critically
discuss the impact of the law on social work practice. Assess how the implementation of
the law impacts at least two of the following: Clients, social workers as professionals,
social work organizations, and society as a whole. Be sure to address the delivery and
access to social services.
5. Conclusion: Summarize the main points of your paper in a clearly written paragraph.
